Jerry Hall Obituary

We mourn the passing of our good friend, exceptional father, and beloved husband, Jerry Hall. Jerry left this life on Friday, March 8, 2013, in Galveston. He was 71 years young. Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16, at Springtown Church of Christ. Interment: Jaybird Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials: Ghana West Africa Street Children Fund, Springtown Church of Christ, P.O. Box 96, Springtown, Texas 76082; Cook Children's Medical Foundation, 801 W. 7th Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76104. A native of Springtown, he was born Feb. 26, 1942, the second son of Melvin and Laverl "Tommie" Hall. A graduate of Springtown High School and North Texas State University (UNT), he received a B.A. in science with plans to coach football and teach biology. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth "Tootie" Roden, on a blind date in 1963, marrying Jan. 4, 1964. He was a lifelong member of Springtown Church of Christ and served as an elder. Jerry coached and taught in the Ganado ISD in South Texas, White Settlement ISD in Fort Worth and Azle ISD where he retired to go into business in 1983. His love of and success in football and track during his high school years served him well as he produced winning teams and track stars. His first airplane flight was to Sacramento where his national champion hurdler was included in the Sacramento National High School Invitational Track and Field Meet. He had several state qualifiers in relays and hurdles in his career. Upon retirement from education, he purchased a granular fertilizer business and made a successful run for 16 years. Since he said he had to "change careers every 16 years," he concentrated on raising cattle, baling hay and Wednesday golf. He was always grateful for the opportunity to purchase the old home place where he spent his childhood and continued to farm until his untimely death. Dealing with heart disease, he was placed on the heart transplant registry in November 2011. In January 2012, he received the call for a new heart and drove to UTMB Galveston for the successful transplant. When asked if he was sure he wanted to drive he said he wanted to think about "something besides what's coming up next!" He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jimmy Hall; infant son; and infant daughter. Jerry never met a stranger and no matter where you went with him, he always ran into some one he knew. He was a caring, compassionate, kind and generous man who was greatly loved and will be missed by his wife of 49 years, Liz "Tootie" Hall; sons, Mike Hall and wife, Sabra, of Springtown, Pat Hall and wife, Lisa, of Fort Worth; daughter, Wendy Hall Kennedy and husband, Kyle, of Springtown; sister, Melinda Bradshaw and husband, Terry, of South Fork, Colo.; brother, Tim Hall and wife, Linda, of Springtown; and grandchildren, Jake Hall, Josh Hall, Zachary Hall, Erin Hall, Savannah Hall and Abby Kennedy.

Remembering Jerry from the Springtown days and when he coached with our Dad and Husband Coach Clay in Ganado. He was a good man, and friend. Our Dad thought the world of Jerry, and always remembered the Springtown football team. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Nell Clay, Kay Clay Ullman, and Cliff Clay Jr.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Coach Hall. My husband, Tommy Poindexter, spoke very highly of him since having him as his high school coach. He contacted Coach Hall when he found out he was on the transplant list. I believe they talked several times before and after the surgery. This helped Tommy in preparing for his surgery. I am praying God will comfort the Hall family as you grieve the loss of your loved one.

I lift you up unto the Lord
In this time of grief,
I pray the Lord will be to you
The comfort that you need
And when you have no answers
To all the questions 'why',
Know that God is in control
And is there by your side
He understands the way you feel
And knows the loss you face,
So rest in His eternal love
For there, you'll find His grace.

Jerry is one of my best and long time friends. I have known him all my life. We started to school in first grade together at Reno. I was on the School board when he coached at Azle. I always knew I could count on him for friendship and support. Jerry was always there with that great smile and handshake. I never knew him to say anything bad about anyone. The world would be a better place if we could all learn from him. I will miss him very much. Sorry I am out of town and not there to support his family. My sincerest sympathy.

My condolences, but knowing Jerry well, I know he would not want us to grieve but celebrate a life lived with honor, honesty and Jesus Christ. Love you, Halls

Those who knew Jerry Hall are better people just for having crossed paths with this man. I never heard one bad thing said about him. He was one of the most Christ-like men I have ever known. My condolences to Tootie and the family: Your love will never fail.
