Martha Christina Bowen Obituary
Martha Christina Bowen, 89, died Monday, April 29, 2013, in Austin. Funeral: Mass at a later date. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Catholic Charities or St. Joseph Abbey in St. Benedict, La. Martha's life was filled with love and curiosity. Born on Sept. 4, 1923, in Smackover, Ark., to Neal and Annie Plemmons, she grew up in Mississippi and Beaumont, where she graduated from high school in 1941. Martha was working in White Department Store in Jacksonville when a co-worker, also named Martha, introduced her brother. On Feb. 2, 1946, Martha C. (as she was known by many) married William R. Bowen. Martha's life took her from Texas to Bedford, England, back to Arlington and Richardson, to Orlando, Fla., to Slidell, La., to Austin, to St. Francis Village in Crowley, and back to Austin. She raised six children to be involved empathically in the lives of others. Wherever the family moved, Martha quickly became friends with the priests and sisters of the local parish and made certain her children knew how to access the library. Survivors: Martha is survived by two sisters, who were also dear friends, Annie Marie Maranto and Josephine "Jo" Clemens. It was not unusual to see Annie Marie and Martha in intimate conversation, sometimes laughing, sometimes serious and often seen at Mass together. Jo was an important encourager to Martha, complementing the compassionate intensity expressed by Martha's life. Martha was preceded in death by her husband and an unborn child lost in a miscarriage in the early 1950s. Survivors: In addition to her sisters, her children, William R. Bowen Jr. and his partner, Dovie Bryant, Linda Marie Bowen Burke and her husband, Stephen Burke, J. Patrick Bowen and his wife, Janet Marie Bowen, Margaret Bowen and her partner, Gary Brown, Dr. Neal Anthony Bowen and his wife, Adriana Garcia Bowen, and Virginia Anne Bowen; five grandchildren, Jeremiah Rush Bowen, Ellen Burke-Knox and her husband, Colin Knox, Anne Christine Burke, William Bowen and Giovanna Bowen; and one great-granddaughter, Pepper Knox, who caused Martha to smile.
