Rex Paul Rixie Obituary
Rex Paul Rixie, 56, died at his home Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, following a valiant fight against cancer, a foe that even his security knowledge and athletic abilities could not vanquish. Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Arborlawn United Methodist Church, 5001 Briarhaven Road, Fort Worth. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to One Safe Place - Rex P. Rixie - Children's Education Fund, 1100 Hemphill St., Fort Worth, Texas 76104. Born in Tomah, Wis., Mr. Rixie left home after high school to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. Although a Marine through and through, he never served on a traditional USMC base. Instead he spent his brief career with small Marine detachments, first at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland and later as a Marine security guard at the American embassies in Ankara, Turkey, and at Athens, Greece, where he met his wife, Peggy, 34 years ago. Mr. Rixie earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Arizona and a master's degree from Central Michigan University. A lifelong learner, he loved to read and study so that he knew a lot about many subjects. "Rex loved to test his strength whether by hauling tons of rock for a backyard project, competing in an Iron Man competition, wrestling, martial arts or working out daily at the City Club," his wife recalled. "He especially enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping and hunting in Wisconsin with friends, riding together on bike trails around Texas, shooting skeet, fishing in Canada or scuba diving with me at locations around the world. "But he also loved quiet time to read or work in the yard," she added, "although he could make a game out of anything and had a great sense of humor. Children thought he was just one of them and often asked if he could come out and play, attend their birthday parties, or organize a game for them." Mr. Rixie worked in Bass Enterprises' private security organization for almost 30 years. For the last several years, he was responsible for the downtown properties, working closely with Sundance Square management and the Fort Worth Police Department, and focused on providing a secure environment for Bass Enterprises and for the people who work at and visit Sundance Square. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Rixie; mother, Mary Helen O'Neill Rixie; and brother, Link Rixie. Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Peggy Lucht-Rixie; sisters, Pam Rixie, Becky Rixie-Taylor and Pat Backus; brother, Kit Rixie; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
