Richard "Rick" Strube Obituary
Retired Air Force Maj. Richard "Rick" Strube, 82, passed away Sunday evening, Oct. 13, 2013. Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Friday in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel. Reception to follow. Memorials: Donations to Harbor Club of Fort Worth, 3000 W. 5th St., Fort Worth, Texas 76107, or to a . Rick was born Sept. 3, 1931, in Rockford, Ill., to Margaret Try and William Strube. Eleven years later, the family moved to Los Angeles and Rick's lifelong passion with the ocean began. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and years later made his first stop at the former Carswell AFB in Fort Worth. He retired a 20-year career flying the KC-135 refueling aircraft in distress and helping them get back home. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross award among many other medals, but this one resulted from his actions to avert an aircraft accident. Rick, a proud veteran of his service during Vietnam, would regale many of us with stories about his career and his family. Those humorous events that thread through the life of a man loyal to his God, his family and his country and then brought life by the laughing, twinkling storyteller that he was. After retiring from the Air Force, the vigorous man that he was sought other employment and succeeded in the private sector as well for a number of years before settling down to his wife of 29 years, Jan Nichols Strube from Stanton. He enjoyed daily swims, stories, laughed readily and never met a stranger, encountering each with his gentle spirit of unconditional love. He will be missed by his many friends and neighbors, by the fellow members of the Harbor Club over the last 33 years, in addition to the generations of family he leaves behind. He was preceded in death by his son, Bennett Strube; daughter, Joy Strube Goodman; his parents; and his brother, Bill Strube. Survivors: Wife, Jan; three sons, Greg, Philip and Stephen Strube and wives, CiCi and Margaret, respectively; a daughter, Leslie Strube Miller and husband, Parker Coble; stepson, Mark Smith and his wife, Robin; stepdaughter, Sharla Smith Cranfill and her husband, Scott; also, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive Rick.
