Robert Louis "Bob" Gendry Obituary
Robert Louis "Sweet Ole Bobby" Gendry died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, in Fort Worth after a short but intense battle with pancreatic cancer. Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel, 3100 White Settlement Road in Fort Worth. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be donated to Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County. Bob was born in Decatur, Ill., on Sept. 8, 1940, to Theodore A. Gendry and Edna A. Hitzemann Gendry. He graduated from Douglas MacArthur High School in Decatur, Ill., in 1958, received a bachelor of science degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., in 1962, and an MBA from the University of Illinois in 1964. Bob was working for IBM in 1967 when he joined the U.S. Navy. After Officers' Training School, he was assigned to a destroyer, the USS Collette. His first cruise lasted 88 days when the ship was involved in the effort to extricate the USS Pueblo from North Korea. After that he served off the coast of Vietnam in combat operations. Bob was very proud of his service to the country and had many good stories to share from that time. Bob retired from IBM in 2000 after 36 years with the company in Poughkeepsie, Chicago, San Jose and finally at the IMS Systems Center in Dallas. Bob traveled extensively, visiting 49 of the 50 states and nearly 100 independent countries or territories on all seven continents. He especially enjoyed his international trips with Habitat for Humanity. His volunteer activities in retirement included working with the local Habitat organization, Texas Ramps, and Meals on Wheels. Survivors: Bob is survived by his wife and partner of 30 years, Pamela; brothers, Thomas Gendry and wife, Diana, of San Antonio and David Gendry and wife, Mary Margaret, of Decatur, Ill.; children, Wendy Clay and husband, David, of Benbrook, Ronda Fellingham and husband, Lincoln, of North Richland Hills and Larry Bearden of Bedford; four precious grandchildren; a very large and supportive extended family; and his favorite companion, his boxer, Oscar.
