Suzanne McGown Obituary
Suzanne Shaffer McGown, 75, died at home surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 29, 2013. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church. Interment: Private. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the following organization: Delta Hearts of Gold Therapy Dogs, Animal Assistance Therapy, 4524 Knoll Ridge Drive, Aledo, Texas 76008; Union Gospel Mission, 1331 E. Lancaster Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76102; or St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, 2700 McPherson Ave., Fort Worth, Texas 76109. Sue was born on Feb. 19, 1938, in Boston, Mass., to Stuart and Grace Shaffer. She spent her childhood in West Newton then attended Northfield School for Girls and Skidmore college. She married Jule Grey McGown in 1963 and they moved to Austin, where Grey attended the University of Texas Law School. Upon graduation, they moved to Fort Worth in 1966 and raised three children, Suzanne, George and Sarah. She was a partner with her husband in the residential real estate business for many years. Sue was a member of the Assembly, the Junior League of Fort Worth, The Edna Gladney Home, Union Gospel Mission, Delta Hearts of Gold Therapy Dogs, and was a ruling elder at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church. She traveled through Europe, Canada, and Central America - Guatemala and Mexico. She enjoyed meeting the local village artisans to buy folk art, textiles and pottery. Sue was a magnificent cook and a great friend. She was an avid fan of the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox. Continuing the tradition of her family, she returned to Kennebunkport, Maine, each summer to spend time with cousins and friends. One of her most joyful activities was her volunteer work with Hannah, her therapy dog, at The West Center, Cook Children's Hospital, and Luella Merrett Elementary School. Sue was deeply devoted to family, friends and had an unbinding love for all of her grandchildren. Her family appreciates the care provided by Sharon McGinnis and Ella Horne of Community Hospice. Sue was preceded in her death by her son, Jule Grey McGown Jr., and her parents, Stuart and Grace Shaffer. Survivors: Husband of 50 years, Grey McGown; children, Suzanne McGown, George McGown and wife, Tami, Sarah McGown Everton and husband, Jeff Everton; sister, Linda Dupuy and husband, Trevor Dupuy; sister-in-law, Laura McGown; grandchildren, Jack, Grey, George, Allison and Ashley McGown.
