Virginia Lee Craig Hanks, 78, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, due to complications from Lewy body dementia. A longtime resident of Grand Prairie, Virginia died peacefully at home. Memorial service: (private) Thursday. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bean-Massey-Burge Funeral Home (South). Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lone Star Park Charitable Foundation for Grand Prairie or the Lewy Body Dementia Association, Virginia was born Aug. 14, 1935, in Winfield, Kan., where she grew up. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1953 and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She embarked on a career with Braniff Airlines where she met the love of her life, H. Wayne Hanks, and started a family. In addition to being a full-time mother, Virginia was owner and president of JEMALEE Industries, one of few women-owned businesses in Texas at the time. Virginia served on several boards and in leadership positions for many organizations in Grand Prairie, including the Grand Prairie YMCA, the Grand Prairie Rodeo Club "Wranglers," Women's Club of Grand Prairie and New Horizons. She was a longtime volunteer for the Parent-Teacher Association at several schools, holding a variety of statewide offices and receiving lifetime membership recognition. Her flair for organization was evident in many of these efforts, helping several successful initiatives such as the Festival of Trees and Mistletoe Ball for the DFW Medical Center Foundation and Lone Star Park Charitable Foundation. Although an accomplished businesswoman and community advocate, Virginia will be best remembered by her family for her unlimited compassion, tireless support and amazing ability to enhance the lives of her children and grandchildren. There was nothing "Super Grandma" couldn't do, and she will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, H. Wayne Hanks of Grand Prairie; parents, Ruth and William Craig of Winfield, Kan.; and brother-in-law, Jack Pringle of Winfield, Kan. Survivors: Daughter, Linda Lee and husband, Michael, of Grand Prairie; daughter, Martha Vandeveerdonk and husband, Tony, of Grapevine; daughter, Jayne Christian and Steve Edes of Euless; grandchildren, Alayna Conley and husband, Eric, Elise and Erik Vandeveerdonk and Price and Craig Christian; their father, Blaine Christian; great-grandson, Liam Conley; and sister, Shirley Pringle of Winfield, Kan.
