Soila Diaz Obituary
Video Memory
Soila "Sally" G. Diaz, 80, a longtime Arlington resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Tuesday, April 1, 2104. She was born Feb. 6, 1934, in Poth. She graduated from Uvalde High School in 1954, and received her associate degree in 2003 at 69 years old. She was married to the late Lupe Diaz in 1956. Sally and Lou spent the early years of their marriage stationed in Hawaii. She traveled the world with Lou well into their retirement. Sally was a librarian and genealogist for the Arlington Public Library. She shared her passion for discovering her own roots with many Arlington residents. She served on a presidential commission studying cancer in the late '70s. She helped found Hispanics for Higher Education to help others reach their goals. She took up optometry on her own to provide low cost or free eye glasses for the less fortunate. She served as president of LULAC. In 2006 she was recognized as one of the most influential citizens of Arlington. She served on the committee to bring Cowboys' stadium to Arlington. She was a longtime member of St. Matthews and sang in the choir. She loved to sing hymns as well as the songs that her mother sang to her growing up, as her brother Alvaro played guitar. Sally worked tirelessly to make a difference in this world and while we don't always know that she was behind it, we see those changes every day. Survivors: She is survived by her daughter, Analisa Gabriel; son, Adrian Diaz; grandchildren, Jeremy Coward, Raef Diaz, Gabrielle Diaz.
