Gladys LaVonne McFarland, 93, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2014, in Bedford. Funeral: 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Mount Olivet Chapel. Interment: 10 a.m. Friday in Laurel Land Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Olivet. Memorials: May be made to the . Gladys was born in 1921 in Dodge City, Kan., and grew up during the Great Depression and the west Kansas Dust Bowl of the 1930s. When most wheat farming families were leaving west Kansas because of the harsh conditions, Mom's family never gave up and some family members are still farming there today. It was during World War II that Gladys met Dale at the USO in 1944. In a short whirlwind courtship, they were married in 1944. Gladys and Dale were married for over 65 years, worked full time, raised three kids, retired, then came out of retirement to work with two of her children for another 25 years. Some of the happiest times for Gladys and Dale was after the kids left home. They began square and round dancing for over 20 years and traveled all over Texas to dance. They danced until they could dance no more physically and mentally. Once they fully retired, they moved into the Wellington to ease some of the physical requirements of daily chores and found a whole new family. Gladys' time was at The Wellington with lots of friends and neighbors made the last few years of her life a real joy. Gladys was preceded in death by her son, David Lee McFarland, in 1974; and her husband, Dale McFarland, in 2009. Survivors: Son, Ron McFarland and wife, Shari; daughter, Jody Cowan and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Sean, Kelly, Christie McFarland, Tonya Cowan Solomons and Todd Cowan; and great-grandchildren, Lauren, Reagan, Ty McFarland, Cheyenne Hailey, Blake and Brooklynn Eckols, Samantha Cowan, Bobby Cowan, Evan Solomons and Breckin Solomons.
