Sam P. Saladino Obituary
Sam P. Saladino, 92, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014. Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Friday in Greenwood Chapel. Interment: 2 p.m. Waco Memorial Park, Waco. Sam was born Sept. 14, 1921, in San Antonio, to Italian immigrants. In 1926, his family moved to Waco. Sam graduated from Waco High School in 1940. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Sam joined the Army Air Corps and served his country during World War II, from Dec. 27, 1941, to Nov. 5, 1945, as an aircraft mechanic stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. After World War II, he returned to Waco, met and married Wanna Martin on Jan. 8, 1947. They had three children. He worked at many crafts, including jewelry repair, brick masonry and carpentry. Sam also worked for the civil service from 1945 to 1974 as a firefighter, first at Connally Air Force Base in Waco until it closed in 1967. He then transferred to Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth until his retirement in 1974. His first wife, Wanna, preceded him in death April 1, 1976. His second wife, Nova Poston, preceded him in death in January 1993. Sam was a loving husband and father always putting his family first. He was an avid reader having read the World Book Encyclopedia from A to Z twice, but his favorite books were Louis L'Amour westerns. Sam took great pride in maintaining his car, home, yard and garden. A hard worker, he instilled strong work ethics in his children. As a first-generation American, Sam was proud of his country. After the terrorists' attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, at the age of 79 he stated, "Surely there is something a man my age can do to serve his country and protect our freedom." The family would like to thank the White Settlement Nursing Center for their wonderful care during the last two years. In addition to his first two wives, Wanna and Nova, Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Eva; brothers, Frank, Anthony, Johnny and Louis; infant sister, Loucille; and sisters, Lucille and Sandina. Survivors: Wife, Thelma Morrison of Fort Worth; sister, Ann Brooks of Waco; son, Mark Saladino (Nancy) of Norman, Okla.; daughters, Sheila Ferrell (Jim) of Fort Worth and Sheryl Aldridge (Steve) of Aledo; grandchildren, Samantha Elder (John) of Aledo and Austin Aldridge (Brittany) of White Settlement; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
