Harold Raley Dunn Obituary
Colonel Harold Raley Dunn, 91 years young, a retired Army officer, passed away Friday, March 29, 2013, at a care center in Fort Worth. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 1000 Penn St. Interment: (for family) at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 19, in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Scholarship Fund, Military Officers Association of America, 201 N. Washington St., Alexandria, Va. 22314, 800-234-6622, wsc@moaa.org. Raley was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Dallas and raised in the Raley family home in Terrell. Following graduation from Terrell High School, he spent his freshman year at Texas Military College, then transferred to TCU. Pearl Harbor occurred midyear in his senior year, and he left school with most of his classmates, joining the U.S. Army as a private. He graduated from George Washington University 15 years later while on active duty. Col. Dunn's Army service spanned 33 years including three wars (World War II, Korea and Vietnam) and many responsible command, staff and advisory positions. He served in Germany, Italy, France, Taiwan, Australia, Korea, Alaska, Maryland, Florida, Texas, Virginia and Kentucky, and was awarded, among others, the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit for exceptional meritorious service. He loved soldiers, and particularly treasured his assignments with troop units. He enjoyed seeing younger officers and NCOs who served with him go on to successful careers in senior jobs. Col. Dunn met and married his wife of 64 years, Mary, while serving in Europe. His Army career benefited in hundreds of ways from the efforts of his wife, a World War II Army nurse, who knew how to make homes out of hovels and rear children in impossible circumstances. Raley was preceded in death by his wife, his two children and a sister. Survivors: Grandsons, Raley and Daner White; nephews, George and Douglas Carey and Michael and George Magoulas; and triplet nieces, Francesca Nixon, Mary Ann Haar, and Norma Jean Loftus.
