Richard L. "Dick" Gifford Obituary
Richard L. "Dick" Gifford passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013. Memorial service: 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at First Presbyterian Church, 1000 Penn St., Fort Worth, 76102. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Terrace Foundation or to First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth. Born Sept. 6, 1925, in Roswell, N.M., and raised in Amarillo, Dick had been a resident of Fort Worth since 1956. Following three years in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he married Eloise Hazel Bast in 1946. Eloise preceded him in death in 2009. They had been residents of Trinity Terrace since 2001. A 1949 graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., he moved to Amarillo and entered radio as an announcer. He transferred to KTVT-TV in Fort Worth in 1956 and later became local sales manager until his retirement after 30 years. Known for his distinctive bass voice, Dick was active in Barbershop, singing jingles for radio and television and with the Dave Garroway Show in Chicago. He was a member of the Four Hearsemen Barbershop Quartet, 1955 SPEBSQSA International Champions. He was an active member of the FW Barbershop Chapter which he directed for several years. He helped organize the Pitch Pirates Quartet which won the Southwestern District Championship in 1959. The Pirates later became the Potentates Quartet, the official quartet of the Moslah Shrine Temple. Dick was an active Shriner. He was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth where he sang with the choir. He also sang for many years with the Fort Worth Opera Chorus. As a volunteer he gave many hours to the Fort Worth Presbyterian Night Shelter. Another passion included traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada with Eloise and their cats. The family is especially appreciative for all the devoted care given to Dick in recent years by Trinity Terrace and Vitas. Survivors: He is survived by son, John and daughter-in-law, Anne; daughter, Jan; son, David; grandchildren, Greg, Jim, Aliya and Hameed; eight great-grandchildren; and many loving friends.
