George Riley Barnhart Obituary
George Riley Barnhart, 64, passed away at home, with his family by his side, Wednesday, May 29, 2013, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, at the Benbrook Fire Department, 528 Mercedes St., Benbrook. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Benbrook Firefighters' Association is appreciated. Contact the Benbrook Fire Department for donation information at 817-249-1727. George was born in Guthrie, Okla., on March 9, 1949, the son of Frederick and Mildred Moore Barnhart. After his graduation from Guthrie High School, he relocated to Arlington to attend the University of Texas at Arlington. At UTA, he was a proud member of the Sam Houston Rifles (the Jodies), serving as commander during his senior year. It was also at UTA where he met and then married his dedicated and loving wife of more than 40 years, Janet Daugherty. A veteran firefighter and paramedic, George was a member of the first paramedic class in North Texas. He often told stories of he and his fellow paramedics literally "making it up as they went," bouncing down the streets of Fort Worth in the back of an ambulance. His resourcefulness, cool-headedness and tenacity made him a respected leader, teacher and friend during his 10 years as a flight paramedic for CareFlite, and during his 27-year career as captain at the Benbrook Fire Department. The positive impact he made on his family, friends, colleagues, and the hundreds of people whose lives he saved cannot be understated. He will be truly missed. George was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill. Survivors: His loving wife, Janet; son, Matthew; son, Jacob and his wife, Merritt Martin; a niece; several nephews; his brothers at the Benbrook Fire Department; and a large fellowship of North Texas first-responders.
