Shirley Columbus Foster Obituary
Shirley Columbus Foster, 93, passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013. Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Arlington Community Church. Interment: Johnson Station Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Arlington Funeral Home. Shirley was born on April 19, 1920, in Britton to Jesse Franklin Foster and Eva Jenettie "Nettie" Rogers Foster. He was the fourth of eight children born to his parents and was the last surviving sibling. Shirley's family moved to the Arlington area about 1933 and he lived here the rest of his life, except for the five years that he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Two of those years he served in Africa and Italy. He was part of "The Greatest Generation" that survived the Great Depression and World War II. He was named Shirley for an uncle and Columbus for his grandfather, Christopher Columbus Foster, who lived in Mississippi. He loved his family, his Savior Jesus Christ, and growing vegetables, especially tomatoes. He was a member of the Arlington Community Church since 1960. Shirley spent his adult years as a maintenance engineer for several large department stores, including The Fair Store, Titche's and Joske's. He was also a handyman for all his family, friends, acquaintances and church. There was almost no job that he could not do and he did them well. Shirley was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Franklin Foster, Howard Foster, Glen Roy Foster; sisters, Ludy Foster Brewton, Nellie Mae Foster, Clara Mae Foster and Virginia Elizabeth "Beffie" Foster Baxter. Survivors: Shirley is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mattie Effie Brewton Foster. She was his elementary school sweetheart; daughters, Edith Elaine Hoad and husband, Raymond, and Helen Louise Fratena and companion, Danny Bazaldua; niece, Ruby Brewton, who was raised like a sister; sisters-in-law, Joyce Jones and husband, Pierce, of Mansfield and Shirley Jill Malin Foster of Bossier City, La.; brother-in-law, Bernice Brewton of Arlington; granddaughters, Emily Hoad and Cheryl Hamilton and husband, Andy; great-grandchildren, Lana and Vance Hamilton; nephews, James Foster, Wayne Foster, Donald Foster, David Baxter and Ronald Baxter; nieces, Ann Nelson, Frances Newsom, Geneva McCoy, Martha Lachinski, Kim Foster and Caren Foster; also many other family members, friends and neighbors.
