Mary Elizabeth Moffitt Rhodes Obituary
Mary Elizabeth Moffitt Rhodes, 92, left this life peacefully Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013. Graveside service: 1 p.m. Saturday in Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Presbyterian Night Shelter or First Street Mission at First United Methodist Church. The eldest of five children, she was born Nov. 17, 1920, to Jena Mae Carter and Joseph Wheeler Moffitt of Greenville, S.C. She married James Robert Rhodes, also of Greenville, in 1941. Separated by World War II, Mary worked in munitions manufacturing in Baltimore while Robert served with the U.S. Army Air Force in India. The couple relocated to San Antonio and Oklahoma City, Okla., with Robert's management duties with General Motors. He was called back to active duty during the Korean War and remained in U.S. Air Force logistics and supply until his retirement in 1978. Mary flourished in the adventures of a military spouse, raising a family in France, Iran, South Carolina and Texas. She was a natural homemaker/decorator, an excellent cook and designer/seamstress. She loved travel and cultural experiences. A compulsive multi-tasker, she relished juggling work in school library services, retail, data services with church programs and school activities of two active children. Her absolute joy was engaging in traditions and creating memories with her four beloved grandchildren. Her most cherished lifework was instructing arthritic patients in her widely acclaimed water fitness program at the Amon Carter Jr. Downtown YMCA (1989-2004). She retired at age of 84. She loved the community of friends and neighbors at her Arlington Heights home. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister; a brother; and her husband. Survivors: Sisters, Doris Matthews of Houston, Ann Chambers of Pelzer, S.C., and Maryann Moffitt of Corpus Christi; children and spouses, Susan Morris and Terry Morris of Georgetown and Mark Rhodes and Roni Anson of Austin; grandchildren, Somer Morris of Silverton, Colo., Tod Morris of Boise, Idaho, Margaret Rhodes of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary Anna Rhodes of San Antonio; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in Texas and South Carolina.
