Don R. Harris Obituary
Don R. Harris, 75, of Meridian passed away Monday afternoon, Oct. 21, 2013, at a Waco hospital surrounded by his loving wife of 57 years, Teddy, and other family members at his side. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Meridian First Baptist Church. Lawson Funeral Home of Meridian is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of usual remembrances, donations be made to North Bosque Helping Hands, 415 S. Hill St., Meridian, Texas 76665. Don was born Jan. 12, 1938, near Meridian. He was a son of Sterling S. and Fannie Mae Terry Harris. At a young age, he moved to Morgan, where he was raised. On Oct. 5, 1956, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Teddy Lee Wheat, in Morgan. Don graduated from Morgan High School in 1956 and began his remarkable 42-year career in radio and was undeniably one of Dallas-Fort Worth's most notable voices in broadcast history. After attending Elkins Institute in Dallas in July 1956, Don began his career in radio at KCLE-AM in Cleburne in 1957. He later joined WBAP-AM in Fort Worth in 1965. Don worked for KLIF-AM for a short time before returning to his home at WBAP. There, he worked until his retirement in December 1997. His pinnacle of success in radio became evident all across the industry when Don was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2007. His later years after retirement were filled with things he enjoyed the most -- ranching on his 160-acre cattle ranch in Johnson County and spending time with his wife, Teddy, loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling and Fannie Terry Harris. Survivors: His wife of 57 years, Teddy of Meridian; sister, Betty Myers of Morgan; son, Keith Harris of Joshua and his wife, Sandra, and their children, Christian, Clint and Cela Harris; son, Kent Harris of Meridian and his children, Stewart and Sam Harris; son, Kelly Harris of Grapevine and his wife, Carolyn, and their children, Collin and Olivia Harris; great-granddaughter, Trinity San Juan; a number of other relatives; and a host of friends.
