George Eugene Lord Obituary
George Eugene "Gene" Lord, 84 of Bedford died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Founder's Chapel at White's Chapel United Methodist Church, Southlake. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity. He was born to the late George Joseph Lord and Bessie Watson Lord on March 12, 1929, in Cheapside. Gene graduated from Cuero High School in 1947 and received a B.A. in English from Texas A&M College in 1962. He was originally in the class of 1952, but changing majors, working his way through school and the Korean War interfered. He married Jimmie Gifford on March 7, 1959. They spent most of their time in Texas, primarily in Houston, Greenville and Colleyville. Although his degree was in English, his studies were incredibly varied, ranging from rangeland management to physics to mathematics. Gene worked as a computer programmer and systems analyst starting at First State Bank of Houston and ending with LTV Systems. A notable highlight of his career was his time working at NASA, programming the simulators that the astronauts used to train for their missions during the Apollo, Apollo-Soyuz, Skylab and Shuttle missions. Gene was a veteran, proudly serving in the U.S. Navy at El Centro, Calif., during the Korean War. Gene was a particularly avid gardener. The term "born with a green thumb" is especially appropriate. He was an organic gardener long before it was popular and his family has many memories of hauling and spreading manure on the yard and the ripe smell of compost in the summer. In every place he ever lived, Gene left the yard far better than it was when he arrived. His other love was his children, Greg and John. He supported them through countless seasons of baseball, football, soccer and track. He even trekked to Philmont Scout Ranch with the Boy Scouts one summer for 10 days of high-adventure camping. By his quiet example, he taught them how to be good men. Survivors: Gene is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jimmie; son, George Gregory and wife, Cheryl Vogels Lord, both Aggies, of Lafayette, Colo.; and granddaughters, both Aggies, Mariah of Baltimore, Md., and Molly of College Station.
