Hugh Edward Chavern Obituary
Hugh Edward Chavern, 90, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. Celebration of life: On Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, there will be a celebration of life at Trinity Terrace for those who want to celebrate him. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, it was Hugh's wish that memorials be made to or to his favorites: the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (www.nami.org) or Tarrant Area Food Bank (www.tafb.org). A physician who received his medical training at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, Dr. Chavern was a general practitioner in Pittsburgh before entering the field of psychiatry. He was a certified psychiatrist and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and served as medical director of the Community Mental Health Center at Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, Pa., for 13 years. He was also an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and received some of his training from Masters & Johnson. Dr. Chavern was in the United States Army and the United States Navy. In his retirement years, he served on the Board of MHMR in Tarrant County and surveyed hospitals for the Joint Commission of Hospital Accreditation in numerous cities within the United States. Hugh had a wonderful laugh and a great sense of adventure, traveling to all seven continents during his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Nancy Barrett of Dallas. Survivors: Hugh is survived by his wife, June; children, Suzanne Bozell of Lakewood, Colo., James Chavern of Fort Collins, Colo., Edward Chavern of West Mifflin, Pa., and David Chavern of Falls Church, Va.; son-in-law, Rick Barrett of Dallas; stepchildren, Pamela Pierson of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Valerie Kasten of Carbondale, Ill., Matthew Harnest of Fort Worth, Cynthia Harnest of Fort Worth and Cheryl Harnest of New York, N.Y.; sister, Norma Kopko of Canton, Ohio; brother, Robert Chavern of Cranford, N.J.; as well as 11 grandchildren.
