Maxine Schaffer Obituary

Maxine Elizabeth Schaffer, 92, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church. Private interment. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to The May Owen Foundation or a charity of the giver's choice. Maxine was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Oklahoma City, Okla., to Roxy and Edna Middleton. She was raised in Pioneer, Texas, where she tagged along after her older brother, Wayne, until moving to Fort Worth when Maxine was 13 years old. She graduated from TCU with a degree in sociology, was a past president of the TCU Women Exes and remained very active with the school and alumni her whole life, attending every home and away football and basketball game she could go to. As she once said, "Honey, I bleed Purple!" During World War II, she drove an ambulance for the American Red Cross and after the war went to work for the telephone company until, when on a ski vacation in Aspen with friends, she was introduced to Dr. Richard Schaffer and the rest was history. They enjoyed over 53 years of marriage and were avid skiers, golfers and tennis players. During their years together, Maxine and Dick traveled the world with their many, many friends, church members and family having a very fun and active life. Maxine also volunteered at All Saints Hospital for over 50 years, logging over 10,000 hours of service. She was also a member of the Woman's Club of Fort Worth, the Colonial Country Club Tennis Association and a life member of Presbyterian Women. Maxine loved her husband and First Presbyterian Church where she was an elder and very active in the many outreach programs the church supports. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Dick Schaffer; her parents; and her brother, Wayne. Survivors: Maxine leaves behind two nieces, four stepchildren, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
