Gordon was born on July 22, 1934, to Gordon Swift Sr. and Oma Jones Swift in Tarrant County. He attended the Lake Worth School system as a student from 1940 to 1951. From 1972 to 1975 he served as president of the board of trustees. Gordon attended TCU from '51 through '58. He then received his civil engineering license from the state of Texas, starting his career with the city of Fort Worth Public Works Department working his way to chief design engineer before going into private practice for over 48 years. Gordon S. Swift, president and owner of Gordon S Swift Consulting Engineer, Inc., joined forces with Barron-Stark Consulting Engineers, LP, and formed the new entity known as Barron, Stark & Swift Consulting Engineers, LP. Gordon enjoyed hunting and relaxing on his ranch, flying his plane and traveling to his two favorite places, Africa and Alaska. He spent many hours on his plan to invent a gravity wheel. The family graciously extends a heartfelt thank-you to the Covenant Hospice Group for their unwavering and diligent care during the end of Gordon's life.
