Koppert, Robert S. "Rob"
Koppert Robert "Rob" S. Koppert, 65, died from therapeutic complications of an aortic valve replacement in his New York City residence on August 11, 2015. Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, Rob was a 1968 graduate of Loudonville High School, and a 1972 Honors graduate of The College of Wooster. He earned a Master's degree from The Ohio State University, where he continued coursework while working both as an advisor in OSU's Office of Continuing Education and in the admissions office for the College of Optometry. He had recently retired from his position as Director of College Counseling at The Dalton School in Manhattan. Rob's NYC residence was so near the World Trade Towers that police barricades prevented him from returning to his home for two months after the terrorist attack of 9/11, the horror of which he captured in characteristically vivid and observant reporting in emails from that day. His life was lived, both literally and figuratively, at Ground Zero. He was a master of literate, animated and hilariously entertaining conversation. He accompanied enthusiastic late-night singing at various holidays and gatherings with appropriately celebratory piano-playing, carefully avoiding the soft pedal. As Ellen C. Stein, Head of Dalton School, wrote in her notice to the New York Times, " for almost two decades, Rob shepherded hundreds of our students and families through this complex process with warmth, intelligence, and a deep dedication to their well-being and future." Rob was preceded in death by his parents, Robert R. Koppert and Jean Sutton Koppert. He is survived by brothers, Eric R. Koppert and Bruce Koppert; former sister-in-law, Dana Dodge; nephews, Eric D. Koppert, Sam Koppert, Tom Koppert, and Jack Koppert; and many extended family members and friends. A private memorial celebration will be held in New York. Plans for a family memorial in Ohio are incomplete. Since Rob was passionate about education, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to The Loudonville-Perrysville Alumni Scholarship, c/o Sue Banks, PO Box 12, Loudonville, OH, 44842; The Loudonville-Perrysville School Foundation, PO Box 73, Loudonville, OH 44842; or The Wooster Fund, The College of Wooster, Wooster, OH 44691.
