Shaw Carolyn Baas Shaw, 85, of Upper Arlington, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family. A beloved mother and grandmother ("Nana"), Carolyn was born on November 8, 1928, in Columbus to the late Carl Christian Baas and Margaret Ellen Baas. She was a graduate of Upper Arlington High School, Monticello College and Preparatory School, and The Ohio State University
where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Carolyn drove fine harness horses in her youth and she bred, raised, and raced harness horses as an adult. She was a member of the Columbus Riding Club, Capital Area Humane Society Board, Childhood League Board IV, Catherine Black Cancer Ray, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, The Buckeye Ranch Service Board, The Ohio State University Golf Club, Scioto Country Club, and the board of Inland Products, Inc. Carolyn loved traveling with friends and family, particularly to Europe, Naples, Fla., and Nantucket, Mass., and she visited such far-flung locales as Indonesia, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. She also enjoyed gardening, playing tennis at Northam Park, spending time with her adored dogs and horses, and driving cars, which she did from age 12 on her family's farms. Carolyn was a generous and caring friend who loved to socialize and maintained her many close friendships for decades. She was supremely polite yet could deftly deliver an unexpected quip to make a crowd erupt in laughter. Possessing an uncommon grace and elegance, Carolyn was regularly the most stylish woman in the room. Her warmth, loving presence, and cheerful spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Preceded in death by her former husband James Robert Shaw. Survived by children, Hilary (Roger) Jones, Jay (Jennifer) Shaw; and grandchildren, Holly Eagleson and Juliana Schultz. Friends may call Sunday, March 2, from 2-4 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43221. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to OhioHealth Hospice, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, Ohio, 43214.
