James J. Devitt III

DEVITT James J. Devitt, III, 81, of Upper Arlington passed away Monday, October 1, 2012. He was born in Birmingham, AL on April 21, 1931 to the late Nora and James J. Devitt II of Birmingham, AL. Jim graduated from St. Bernard's Preparatory School, received a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from Auburn University and received a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Auburn University. Jim served briefly in the U.S. Army providing technical expertise at the Chemical Center in Maryland during the Korean War. He was then recruited to Akron, Ohio by Goodyear and developed rubber manufacturing techniques. Continental AG (formerly known as General Tire and Rubber Co.) recruited him from Goodyear and he remained there for 32 years. He participated in the company's technical exchange program which was created as part of a national effort established to assist Japanese companies to regain technical and industrial proficiency in the tire manufacturing industry after WWII. After returning to the US, he served in various domestic positions, creating and developing rubber processing techniques and methodology that earned him twelve patents. Retiring as Vice President, he then established a consulting business working on numerous corporate development projects over the next ten years for the Chinese and Indian tire industries helping to establish rubber manufacturing processes in their newly constructed plants which were instrumental to support the countries' growing infrastructure needs. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, enjoyed traveling, golfing, sports, and studying the Civil War. Jim is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathryn; children, Diane (Jon Fitzgerald) Reynolds, Dr. James (Mary) Devitt, IV, and Mary Boyer; four grandchildren, Olivia and James Devitt V and Graham and Julia Boyer; and sister, Margaret Ann King. A private family burial will be held at St. Joseph Church, 2643 Waterloo Road, Mogadore, Ohio on October 11, 2012 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jim's memory to: The .
