Phyllis P. Tipton

Tipton Phyllis P. Tipton, age 86, of Upper Arlington, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She was born May 9, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Howard and Mabel (Fippin) Pennell. She was a graduate of West High School and The Ohio State University with of Bachelor of Arts degree in organ. Phyllis was an organist at Trinity United Methodist Church for 44 years, piano teacher for hundreds of students spanning a couple generations and organist for the Schoedinger Northwest Chapel for over thirty years. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed by her family and hundreds of piano students. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Thomas J. Tipton in 2011, brother Malcolm Pennell and sister Louise Voltz. Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Heather (David) Downs; son, Thomas Scott Tipton; two grandchildren, Jenna and Greg Downs; niece, Brenda Todd and nephews, Dwight and John Voltz, Malcolm and Jerry Pennell and Arlen Pennell; other relatives and many friends. She was the Organist Emeritus and a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a longtime member of Delta Omicron sorority, the honorary music sorority and the American Guild of Organists. Friends may call 2:30-4:30 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Blvd. Interment to follow Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the "Organ Maintenance Fund" at Trinity United Methodist Church, Columbus, OH 43212, in her memory.
