Slager Dr. Richard F. Slager, 85, of Columbus, peacefully passed away July 8, 2013. He was born to the late Foreman and Mary (Mace) Slager on May 24, 1928. Dick graduated from West High School and went on to receive his Medical Degree from The Ohio State University
, where as an undergraduate he quarterbacked the OSU Football team and played Varsity Tennis. Following graduation from medical school, Dick became a well-respected prominent Orthopedic surgeon, serving patients in Columbus for over 30 years. Throughout his career and life, Dick was dedicated to serving the needs of others through his church and community service. He spent much of his life actively involved in Rotary, eventually receiving the honor of being elected to serve as its' International Vice President, leading its campaign to eliminate Polio around the world. Additionally, Dick traveled the world on a number of medical and humanitarian missions in and outside of Rotary, resulting in numerous honors and awards, including Rotary's Service Above Self Award. Dick was preceded in death by his brother Jim Slager. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Elaine; children, Susan (Bruce) Whetter, Rick (Brenda) Slager, Robin (Paul) Webb, Debbie (Paul) Carlson; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; extended family and friends. Dick loved his wife and cared dearly for his family, placing them first and foremost throughout his entire life. In return he was deeply loved and respected by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him and will always be deeply missed and remembered for his warm caring heart, unselfish commitment to others and an unbridled laugh that could fill a room. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1581 Cambridge Blvd., Columbus, OH 43212, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service with a brief reception following the service.
