Seyler Richard G. Seyler, 80, passed away on January 30, 2014. Richard was born on June 14, 1933, to Lillian Olivet Seyler and Orvel C. George. Richard was a 1955 graduate at Pennsylvania State University where he received his Bachelor of Science. He received his Masters degree and PhD from Pennsylvania State University in 1959 and 1961 respectively. Richard retired in 1995 where he was a Professor at The Ohio State University
in the Physics Department. He was a Consultant with Battelle Memorial Institute, TUNL and Carnegie Institution of Washington. He was a member of the American Physical Society, Division of Nuclear Physics. After many years of teaching a variety of courses as well as a robust program of research into nuclear structure and nuclear reaction theory, Richard then ably served his department at The Ohio State University as Vice Chair for Administration from 1983 to 1995. His duties included overall administration for the entry level physics courses which comprise a majority of the physics teaching load. He was responsible for faculty teaching assignments as well as the host of departmental matters that fell under the rubric of "administration." He approached these duties with rare diligence, a cheerful mien, and inveterate attention to detail. His long tenure in this role under four chairmen testifies to his ability to get along not only with his chairs but also with his faculty cohort in the sensitive matter of teaching assignments and annual reviews. He also enjoyed playing tennis with his colleagues. Preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife Mary Jo Seyler. Interment in Luthersburg, Pennsylvania alongside his wife and mother.
