William Lee White Sr.

White, Sr. William Lee White Sr. After a heroic 6 year battle with Leukemia, William Lee "Bill" White Sr., 85, of Westerville, passed quickly with his wife and two sons by his side on April 25, 2013 after a brief stay at the Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio. He was born on March 22, 1928 to Thomas and Helen White in Kane, PA. Bill attended Lash High School in Zanesville, Ohio before joining the Ohio Guard in June of 1945. Thereafter he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Panama Canal Zone where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. In 1948, he attended The Ohio State University where he graduated with honors in business administration in 1952. After graduation he was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, New York where he met his future wife, Audrey E. Hartman. They were married in Yonkers, NY, on August 29, 1953. Bill began a new career as a youth director with the YMCA, first in Watertown and then in Niagara Falls, NY. Soon he returned to graduate school and in 1961 was awarded a Masters of Social Work from the School of Social Welfare, University of Buffalo, NY. During his first years as a social worker he was employed as a case worker for the Family Service Society of Buffalo, NY. After several years there he became the Associate Director of the Presbyterian Children's Village, Rosemont, PA. In 1966 the family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana where he served as the Executive Director of Family Counseling Services until 1971. Late in that same year he joined Family Counseling and Crittenton Services of Columbus, Ohio as its Executive Director, where he remained until his retirement in 1991. Following retirement he continued as an administrative advisor to humanitarian non-profits. Bill and Audrey have two son's whom they visited often, regardless of where they lived; from Mexico City, Chicago, London and Orlando to San Francisco, Evanston, WY and Salt Lake City, Utah. Family, education and public service were paramount so not only did they help provide for the college education of their two sons, but their four grandchildren as well. When the kids were young the family went on numerous camping, horseback riding, skiing and canoe trips, and visiting their close family. In addition to being a rabid OSU sports fan Bill enjoyed playing competitive racket and hand ball, being a veritable fixture at the downtown Columbus, Ohio YMCA. His son's never beat him at either sport. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert. He is survived by his wife, Audrey E.; his brother, Thomas White, MD; and his sister, Angela Whitman of Miami, FL; his two sons, William Lee White Jr., and Scott Warren White along with their spouses, Murielle Blanchard and Audrey K. White; grandchildren, Autumn White, MD (spouse, Joshua Deily, PhD), Kelsey, Sean and Glen White; and one great grandchild, Brielle S. Deily; as well as countless loving relatives and friends. A celebration of Bill's life will take place on May 11, 2013 in Westerville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either the YMCA or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Bill's name. Go Bucks!
