William Markley Emery

EMERY William Markley Emery, M.D., died Monday, January 21, 2013, at Samaritan Hospital in Ashland from complications of lung cancer. "Doc", as many knew him, was born February 28, 1932 in Ashland to George Myers Emery M.D. and Rachel Markley Emery. He was a lifelong resident of Ashland. He was a 1950 graduate of Ashland High School, a 1954 graduate of Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio and a 1958 graduate of Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He did a rotating internship at Akron General Hospital in Akron, Ohio from 1958 through 1959. His residency was in General Surgery at Akron General where he was Chief Surgical Resident from 1962 through 1963. Dr. Emery was a general surgeon in Ashland from 1963 through 1998, when he retired. He shared a surgical practice with Philip E. Myers M.D. from 1982 through 1998. He was affiliated with Samaritan Hospital and had past affiliations with Kettering (Loudonville), Bellevue, Akron General and Akron Children's Hospital. He was appointed to serve as Ashland County Coroner in 1987, was elected to the position in 1988 and re-elected to subsequent terms until he retired from office in 2010. To date, he is the longest serving Ashland County Corner. He was a member of the following professional organizations: Ashland County Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Assoc., American Medical Assoc., American College of Surgeons, American Society of Abdominal Surgeons, and Ohio State Coroner's Assoc., where he served on the Board of Directors and was awarded the Samuel Gerber Coroner Award in 2003. "Doc" was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ashland Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Other memberships included; Young Men's Business Club, University Club, The Country Club of Ashland, Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Masonic F&AM #151, Scottish Rite Mason, Al Koran Shrine, Ashland County Shrine Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles (Huron) and Huron Yacht Club. In addition to membership in many service and philanthropic organizations, he served the community by volunteering as team physician for Ashland High School for 16 years and won the Outstanding Team Physician Award from the OHSAA in 1978. While serving AHS, he established and educated individuals as professional athletic trainers. He volunteered as team physician for Ashland College/University for 14 years and was instrumental in creating the Sports Medicine Major there. In 1996, he received an award for his service to Ashland University and the Department of Athletics. He was involved in youth and pony league baseball, YMCA Swim Team Parent's Assoc., Community Stadium Improvement Committee, Red Cross, Ashland County Historical Society and was involved in the development of an on-site coroner's office in the Ashland Justice Complex. He was appointed to the Medical Advisor Selective Service Local Board #3 from 1970 thru 1973. His primary hobbies were golf, woodworking, art and history research. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Karen A. (née Zawacki) Emery; a son, William K. (Susan) Emery and their children, Will, Ted and George; a son, Robert P. (Lesley) Emery and their children, Nick, Katurah, Elijah and Peter Brett; a step-son, Ernest R. Bahr and his son, Reed; a step-daughter, Candice R. (Cornell) Loebsack and her children, Philip and Audrey Santillo; and his brother and sister-in-law, G. David (Gretchen) Emery. He was preceded in death by his daughter Elizabeth Ann Emery, who passed in April 2012. Funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church of Ashland at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2013 with the Rev. Sanford Mitchell officiating.
