So interesting to me that this prompt to remember Dotte came up right before her, now also deceased, daughter Rose's birthday. I have been thinking on Rose all week. Quite a loss. Wishing us all blue frosted cake.

I met Dotti in Columbus Ohio when I was a little girl, 1971? She was remarkable. Always busy, always moving. She was the only mommy, except for Elizabeth Nuskin's mom, who was like my mommy. She worked for a living. She had the most remarkable collection of Ms. Magazines that little Rosie and I would pour through attempting to identify ourselves. It was like being in the presence of Gloria Steinem. My everlasting memory of her will be her mellifluous voice. So unlike anything I've ever heard. As if she were always in song.

How fortunate I was to have lived down the street from Dotte; her influence in my life was significant. She showed me first hand that there were other ways of being: that seeming contradictions are not necessarily so; that one can never have enough cats; that art and poetry truly matter; that one can be brilliant and talentedbut still be gullible; and that pragmatism isn't necessarily the best course to follow, to name just a few.
One of many precious memories is of listening to Dotte's privately recorded solo a capella rendition of the Grateful Dead's "Ripple", her voice clearly delighting in the words, and us children at the time tickled by her embrace of our music. Dotte's open mind and open heart were inspirational, exemplary. A life to be remembered and celebrated! I will miss her in this world.

My mother Dotte was truly a great personality. She was highly creative, intelligent, proud, ethical, beautiful, loving, and curious. She told me she was never bored because the natural world fascinated her. When I was young, my friends said she was the coolest mom of all. We were fortunate to have her. Thank you, friends, for your memories. Lisa Russell

Dottie was an amazing woman well ahead of her time. I remember all of the early days at Merrill Publishing when she was an integral part of the Art Department. We shared many good times together.

I have never met such an intelligent talented person. She was fighting for equality for everyone before it became fashionable. Her poetry and art were an integral part of her life. She will be greatly missed by all of her friends.

Dotte Russell was a gentle, talented person I knew at Charles Merrill Publishing long ago. She had courage and cheerfulness that was contagious.
A lovely woman.

She was a completely amazing woman.
I could not have been luckier to be her granddaughter, out of all the women in the world.

So sorry to hear about Dotte. I had not seen her for a while but have fond memories of her, She was always encouraring to me about my writing and scheduled me to do readings several times. My sincere condolences for your loss. I have not been in contact with Dotte and her family for 40 years. Yet, I never forgot her. I still cherish the beautiful "The Great Book on Wine" she gave me in 1975 as a token of her friendship and perhaps her love for me. I will never forget her free spirit and her joie de vivre. I cannot be there on April 1st to attend the service. If I lived in Cols, I would definitely be there. May you rest in peace knowing that you have not been forgotten!
Robert
