I grew up at 67 Gammon Avenue Atlanta Georgia next to the old Gammon Theological seminary and Clark College South Atlanta Campus. I remember very well the faculty housing on Gammon's campus where Atty. Bowen Grandfather Dr. John Wesley Bowen Sr. Lived as well as his father Bishop Bowen grew up. I am so sorry that I did not have the privilege to have know Atty. Bowen.

Janice, please accept my condolences to you and you extended family on the loss of your Father. I remember interviewing him when I was a young man in high school. I saw him as an example of what I wanted to become. I have not communicated with you in years and I regret that it had to be under these circumstances. My thoughts will be with you and your family.

Mrs. Bowen, Janice, Johnny, Margaret & Rose, I have such wonderful childhood memories of time spent with the Bowen clan. Many were through Jack & Jill activities, and more were just Janice & I playing at each other's houses, and riding/driving that awesome surrey with the fringe on top that I had. Margaret, you were always outraged that we didn't let you come along, but you were just a "kid". So were we, but you were the youngest at that time (pre-Rose). Now, as a lawyer practicing in Chicago, I realize how much of my belief that the law should be used as a tool to help those without a voice, was influenced by growing up around wonderful Black lawyers such as my dad and John Bowen. I will always remember his infectious smile. John's legacy is surely reflected in his many accomplishments, but I think he would agree that his & Jeanne's greatest legacy are Janice; John, IV; Margaret; and Rose. God bless all of you. Love, Helen Paxton Arnold.

To the Bowen Family,

Our deepest condolences on the occasion of your great loss. John was a valued mentor of mine in the private practice of law 30 years ago and I will remain forever grateful for his guidance and support. John was a respected community leader and lawyer, and always a perfect gentleman—even during the most heated of courtroom exchanges. He was a great listener too, and always gave freely of his time. Above all, he was a family man. John’s good works for the community reside in the thousands of friends, citizens, colleagues and clients whose lives he touched. He will be long remembered and missed by many. God speed, John.

Aunt Jeanne,Janice, Johnny, Margaret and Rose Ann,

I can't find the words to express adequately all that Uncle John and the Bowen family mean to me and my family. Just know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all now and always.

I don't know a sweeter or kinder man who has meant so much to my family and to so many others. Uncle John had the most amazing heart that always shined through and left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone in the Hogans family and so many others.

We love you!

John Bowen was a wonderful man and excellent lawyer. Humble, down to earth, never uttering a mean word about anyone, always willing to help younger lawyers. I am honored to have had an active role in his state senatorial campaign. He was a rare man who handled with grace and dignity a lot of prejudice against black lawyers in those early days. My life and the community are richer for his presence. My condolences to his family.

As a friend, a mentor, and counsel these notes come to mind: Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers in their generations. The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning.

We are all better for his life ministry and our time together.

We offer you all deep respect and our condolences. May our brother be received with joyfulness, happiness, equanimity, and freedom from suffering.

Uncle John was the last of my five "fathers" from the village that raised me and my brother. His warmth and positive spirit were his hallmark, but his smile...his infectious smile...will forever remain in my heart. Rest in perfect peace, Uncle John.

Many years ago my sister,Carol worked for Mr. Bowen. Sometimes I would stop at his office to visit with my sister. Mr. Bowen was such a gentle, listening, and wonderful. Once I stopped I was once introduced to Mr. Bowen. After that no matter how busy he was, he always had time for me. He was such a wonderful and fantastic man. My thoughts, prayers, and condolences go to his family.
