Alexander Floro Obituary

FLORO Alexander S. Floro, age 88, Wednesday, July 20, 2011, St. Ann's Hospital. Alex is a WWII veteran. Serving our country in the U.S. Army, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division. He was a TSgt and Platoon Sgt. His job was the direct operation of combat platoons. He was stationed in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Southern France and Germany. Alex fought in four invasions - Sicily, Salerno, Italy, Anzio, Italy and Southern France. Major Campaigns include Sicily, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Decorations of honor include: Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts, Good Conduct Medal, European African-Middle Eastern Medal with four Arrowheads, six Battle Stars, Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. Alex is preceded in death by parents, 2 sisters, 2 grandchildren, and loving wife of 53 years Martha Jane (Robison) Floro. Survived by daughter, Brenda Floro Thompson; step-children, Robert (Janice) Davis and Diana (Robert) Lantz; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grand-children; brother, Chug (Marge) Floro; close friends, Marge and Clancy Carrel, Dan Thitoff, Ed Ferbache; Blackie his dog. Friends may call 1-2:30 p.m., Saturday, in the LONG FUNERAL HOME, 5528 Cleveland Avenue, Columbus, Ohio (one block south of SR 161), where funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Family requests memorial donations to Honor Flight, 2085 Ridgecliff Rd., Columbus, Ohio 43221.

Grandpa you will be missed. We never got to fix that floor in your work shop. Always loved hearing your stories and watching you laugh while telling them. You will be missed and I am honored to have meet such a great man.

Our condolences to the Floro family. We're sure going to miss him. He always knew how to put a smile on someone's face, even without saying much. All his stories were very interesting. They came from the "old Country". I never had the honor of meeting either of my own grandfathers. During a bad time a few years ago, my best friend, Lori Smith said I could share her grandpa. After 2 hours of laughing in his kitchen, I forgot what problem had brought me there in the first place. Driving home, I laughed until I cried, knowing that my own grandfathers must have been right there in our midst all evening...smiling...and saying, "Thanks for filling in, Sir. I mean, GrandPa."
