George Bashur Obituary

BASHUR George Bashur, of Powell, OH, died unexpectedly on March 22, 2010. Born June 11, 1953 in McKeesport, PA and preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Laura Bashur. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary (Spagnolo); and their three children, Daniel (Amie) Bashur, Jacyln (Michael) Venne, Christopher (Vanessa) Bashur; and two beloved grandchildren, Matthew and Courtney Bashur; and two closest friends, John Keating, and Brian Usher. George remained an avid Pittsburgh sports enthusiast after relocating his family to Columbus in 1986 to work with Paul Werth and Associates, where became accredited in public relations, winning Prism awards for various client campaigns. In 1996 he founded his own business "gbapr". He was a devoted family man, a talented writer, comedian, artist, creative chef, and accomplished baker. He leaves this world behind always acknowledging that a man's true wealth, is measured by his family, and the love he created, and was certainly surrounded by. He will be sadly missed. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 27 at 2 p.m. at RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 W. Olentangy St./Powell Rd./St. Rt. 750/1/4 mile east of Sawmill Pkwy.), Powell, OH 43065, 614-792-1471. Condolences to www.rutherfordfuneralhomes.com

Dan & Family,

George was a great family man as well as a friend to others. I met George years ago. We golfed together and our love for the Steelers forged a lasting friendship through the years. Although I never met most of George's family, I felt like I knew you through George. I will miss my good friend.
You have my deepest sympathy.

Dearest Mary,

It is heartbreaking to hear about George. I could always hear loud and clear the love you two shared when you would speak about the two of you baking, cooking for Chris' rehearsal dinner or the reasons George purchased specific pieces of jewelry for you in celebration of events in your life. Always, always love between the two of you. I am sorry you have to go through such deep sorrow and want you to know I am thinking of you. Love, Chris

Dear Friend and/or Relative,

It is with profound sadness that I must inform you of the very sudden passing of my Brother-in-Law, George Bashur on Monday, March 22nd. He was just 56.

George was not only married to my sister, Mary, he was also a Sigma Tau
Gamma fraternity brother of mine from our college days at Point Park University. I'm also proud to be able to say that I first introduced him to my sister as well. But that was the easy part. He did the rest for the next 34 years!

George also worked with me for five years in the early 80's when we together launched "The Pittsburgh North Star" and subsequently, "Pittsburgh's Black & Gold" magazine. While we had to close our company during the recession in the 80's, I greatly enjoyed working with George. Even though we didn't make much money, we had a lot of fun trying! We both cried when our fledgling business didn't make it... we both loved it that much. George went on to have a successsful career doing public relations work in the Columbus, Ohio marketplace.

Last fall, just before his youngest son Chris' wedding, George suddenly became ill with what initially was diagnosed as pneumonia. While George rebounded enough to be at Chris and Vanessa's wedding, it was obvious that he had been weakened by his ordeal. As winter approached, he continued to deal with this persistent illness and its' accompanying shortness of breath. It wasn't until December that we were stunned to learn the true magnitude of his problem: Subsequent tests revealed that George didn't have pneumonia, as had first been thought, but rather had been stricken with a viral infection in his heart and more than likely had suffered one or more "silent" heart attacks as a result.

George's heart had endured great amounts of damage...so much so that the doctors could not even operate on three badly-blocked arteries. While he was placed on medication and ordered to rest, we all hoped and prayed that his damaged heart could regain enough strength in order to handle the highly-risky triple-bypass surgery that he so desparately needed.

Early Monday morning, after having spent a pleasant afternoon only hours earlier with his beloved grandson Matthew and recently-newborn granddaughter, Courtney Olivia Bashur; George lapsed into congestive heart failure with his beloved Mary at his side. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful while he was transported to the hospital by paramedics.

George leaves behind a heavily-grieving family. His love for his wife Mary, his sons Dan and Chris and daughter Jaclyn appears to have been nearly-limitless. Son-in-law Michael Venne and Daughters-in law Amie and Vanessa Bashur have also been profoundly affected by this sudden loss.

Along with being an avid golfer and rabid Pittsburgh sports fan, George was quite the amateur artist and interior decorator as his home will readily attest
to any visitor there. His framed artwork as well as handiwork from home improvement projects are visible nearly everywhere. George was quite the "audiophile" too as his framed "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Madman Across the water" album covers will attest. Meanwhile, in another corner of his family room sits his most recent Christmas gift: "The Beatles Rock Band" music set for the Nintendo "Wii". Indeed, George Bashur was not just a fun-loving man who loved his family, he was truly a "Renaissance Man". His Beatles gift bears silent testimony to this fact.

While as I said earlier, I've always taken great pride in the successful relationship that I was lucky enough to introduce for both Mary and George, the thought occured to me many times in the past that my brother-in-law not only loved my sister and fathered three children, but he had forged a thriving and loving family unit that now includes three happily-married children and now even two grandchildren. In addition he had also loved and respected my parents as much as his own and I always greatly admired him for that too.

Ironically, that unquestioned love that he showed his family for his entire life, is the reason now for his being so greivously missed...that and the fact that he was taken away from us at far too young of an age.

One thing though is for certain: The name "George Bashur" and the word "love" should always be spoken in the same sentence, because clearly there have been very few people on this earth who have shown more love throughout their lifetime than this man who was called away far too soon for all of our good.

For the family, it is impossible for them to understand why their husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, son-in-law and brother-in-law had to be called away at this young age. Please pray that God may console them in this most difficult time.

A memorial service will be held at the Rutherford Funeral Home this Saturday, March 27th at 2:00 in Powell, Ohio, a nearby suburb of Columbus. For more information or directions, call me at 724-812-7777. I appreciate your reading my eulogy for my beloved frat brother, brother-in-law and former business associate, George Bashur...as close to a brother as a brother-in-law can be, that's for sure. He will be sorely missed by everyone lucky enough to have known him.

Mary,

I am so proud that I am able to call George my father-in-law. He is the spitting image of Chris in every light. I see his sense of humor, love of family, & kind heart in Chris. I remember last Fourth of July when the two of them set off fireworks behind the house. You were so worried, and I told you they were just boys being boys. They were the best of friends, and always will be. George will be missed everyday. I love you very much.

Dear Mary and Bashur Family,

You have our deepest prayers and sympathy at this very sad time. We each have many rich and wonderful stories to share about George , and will miss him so. I couldn't count the times the mornings began and evenings ended with a quick conversation as he walked the dog and swung a golf club at stones or sticks, blades of grass, or, yes even some dog residue. His creative mind, easy laughter, wild choices of music and flashy party shirts will remain in our memories.

We hope that there is comfort and peace for all of you at this time.

The Shicks.

George LIVED the lyrics to the song "I hope you Dance." I saw him dance with Mary at their wedding; and oh, how he danced with joy at each of his three childrens' weddings!! His legacy is the love he gave in everything he did with Mary and his children and grandchildren. George lives on forever in our hearts--"Love and Happiness" We miss you--Love Darlene

My father, George Bashur meant the world to his family. He was more than a husband to his wife, a dad to his 3 children, and a "Pops" to my children, Matthew (age 3) and Courtney (just 8 days old today).

George Bashur was an ambassador of good will and gave everything he could in love, time, and devotion to his family, and to complete strangers in need. He made holidays, and other special occasions unforgettable. He was a kind, loving, and caring man that will always be remembered by those he touched, and there are not enough words to sum up the good times and joy he provided to all.

March 24, 2010

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
