James Scanlan Obituary

Scanlan James P. Scanlan, age 89, passed away on October 28, 2016 at the palliative care unit at Mt. Carmel West Hospital. Jim was born in Chicago to Gilbert Francis Scanlan and Helen Meyers in 1927. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago with a B.A. degree in 1946, an M.A. and Ph.D in Philosophy, 1950 and 1956. His first job was in San Francisco where he was a fellow of the Institute of Philosophical Research under the leadership of Mortimer Adler. In 1955 he accepted a Ford Foundation fellowship at Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. In 1956 he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Jim taught at Goucher College for 12 years. During this period he became interested in the development of Marxism in the Soviet Union. He studied Russian at Georgetown University, and spent a year immersed in Russian Studies at the University of California at Berkley. With this background he was accepted to an exchange program to study in the Soviet Union. With his wife, Jim spent a year (1964-65) at Moscow State University, living among other Russian philosophy students in a dormitory, and taking advantage of the many cultural activities Moscow offered, before returned to Baltimore in 1965. In 1968 Jim joined the Philosophy Department of the University of Kansas and also headed its Center for Soviet and East European Studies. In 1971 Jim was offered a joint appointment in Philosophy and the Slavic and East European Center at Ohio State University where he remained for the rest of his academic career. From 1988 to 1991 he headed OSU's Slavic and East European Center and he became a Faculty Associate at OSU's Mershon Center. During his tenure at Ohio State Jim also spent two academic terms as a resident scholar abroad: in 1982-83 at the Center for East-European Studies of the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, including a month in April and May 1983 at the Bellagio Study Center of the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy; and in 1987-88 Jim was a visiting fellow at the Slavic Research Center, Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, a particularly rewarding appointment. He was the recipient of many honors and awards for numerous publications (articles, books, and translations). Most recently Jim's interest has been focused on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. Jim is survived by Marilyn Morrison Scanlan, his loving wife of 68 years. Also surviving are two half-brothers, Daniel of Chicago and Thomas of San Diego; and several nieces and nephews. Contributions in his name may be made to any of the arts organizations in Columbus, or to the Sustaining Fund of the First Community Village Foundation. A memorial gathering will take place in early 2017. Services are entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, please visit our online guestbook www.schoedinger.com

With love to Marilyn in this time of sorrow. Jim was one of my favorite people - as are you. So glad I could visit you both in June.

I was saddened by the news that Jim Scanlan has passed away. He had a long and very productive life as a scholar, teacher and patron of the arts. Jim was an invaluable colleague in the Philosophy Department at The Ohio State University. During my time as chairman of that department I relied heavily on Jim's intelligence and good sense in committee work and department affairs. His was a constant voice of reason, compromise and good will through all the years we were colleagues. He was, truly, a gentleman and a scholar. My sympathies to Jim's wonderful wife Marilyn in this time of loss.

Jim Scanlan and I met in 1953 as fellows at Mortimer Adler's Institute for Philosophical Research. My late wife, Fannia, and I became good friends then of Jim and Marilyn and never lost touch with each other for the intervening half century plus. We visited each other in all the houses we lived in across the years and always had plenty to say to each other. Since the much reduced traveling of us oldiesI am all of ten days older than Jimwe communicated regularly by email, keeping our friendship alive. I recently came across a box with photographs of the four of us on a bicycle trip in New England, some time after our California stay, where we all look ridiculously young. Now that we have gotten ridiculously old, that's a good occasion to remember.

Amy and I were deeply sorry to read of his passing. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him at the university, in the commmunity or through the arts.

Jim was a wonderful colleague, distinguished scholar, committed teacher, and very capable administrator. We were very fortunate to have him at Ohio State, where he was universally liked and respected. After his retirement, he remained very active in the field of Russian studies, continuing to publish books and articles. He and Marilyn also continued to attend academic conferences, where it was always a pleasure to see and talk with them. We will certainly miss him.

During the years Jim and I were colleagues at Ohio State, I always enjoyed my interactions with him through the Center for Slavic & E. European Studies. Though I was far junior to him in rank and tenure, he always treated me as an equal among his colleagues, with his ready smile and gentlemanly manner. What a privilege it was to have known him!

Dr. Scanlan was a wonderful boss and a sterling example of an avid scholar and a gentleman when he was director of the Ohio State University Slavic Center. The academic community will surely miss him. I will miss his kindness and his integrity.

Oh how we will miss Jim at First Community Village. I think I will miss his genuineness and gentleness the most. The love between Marilyn and Jim was very evident - Marilyn's eyes still glistened when she would look at Jim. Where there was one, there was the other. What you have taught us about love and commitment . Thank you for this. Mr. Scanlan, we will truly grieve for you and miss you.
