Janet Kottman Obituary

Kottman Janet Kay Kottman was born March 6, 1957 in Ames, Iowa to Roy M. Kottman and Wanda L. Kottman, both deceased. She passed away on December 28, 2016 in Naples, Florida. Janet is survived by her brothers, Robert, Wayne and Gray Kottman; and her two sons, Daniel and David Gregory. Janet had the uncanny ability to bring a bright light to every life she touched. Janet graduated valedictorian from Upper Arlington High School, with honors from Miami (Ohio) University and The Ohio State University College of Law. Janet did not use her higher education for monetary compensation, but to champion the downtrodden and vulnerable. She practiced law for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and the Ohio School Boards Association. In California, outside Yosemite National Park, she served as a Mariposa Director of CASA (California-appointed special advocates for foster children) where she provided advocacy for abused and neglected children. Janet was also a real estate agent specializing in the short-sale process to help individuals losing their homes. The past year-and-a-half Janet has lived in Florida, where she has continued to donate her time and love to anyone that needed it. Janet relished time spent outdoors, especially all things water; an excellent water fitness instructor, kayaker, and swimmer. Janet's impact will ripple for many years to come. She will be greatly missed. Family will receive friends on Sunday, January 8, 2017 from 2-4 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, OH, where Memorial Services will start at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Nature Conservancy, 6375 Riverside Drive, Suite 100, Dublin, Ohio 43017 or Bernie Sanders- Our Revolution, 603 2nd St, NE Washington, DC, 20002. I am so saddened to hear of the loss of our beautiful, smart, compassionate friend Janet. We shared so many good times together in high school and during our college years and I have so many fond and happy memories of my dear friend. I am praying that her sons and family will be comforted in this sad time.

I went to high school with Janet and we were in some of the same classes, and although our time together was short, she made such a lasting impression on me as a bright, balanced, intuitive soul. I always thought so highly of her, and I feel blessed for the small moments we did share. It doesn't surprise me what a wonderful, giving life she led. I knew she was going to be something great.

I tried to get in touch with Janet when our mutual friend from Luxembourg, Gregg Pancoast, died. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with her again through Facebook or e-mail. Ironically, I am in Sarasota, Florida now, and could have seen her! I thought we may be connecting again at the reunion in Luxembourg next year. She had a terrific sense of humor, and was thoughtful, well-spoken, and kind! My condolences to her family.

Janet was one of our favorite and best water fitness instructors at Sawmill Athletic Club. She was a good friend to all and promoted social interaction among the group. We have missed her so much and now so sorry to hear this sad news. My prayers go out to her sons and her family. She was so proud of those boys and loved them dearly

Janet & I had an immediate connection this past October when we were enjoying our time on Lake Powell. We vowed to get together & now I understand why I could not reach her. In 3 short days she taught me so many things. She was truly a gift to this world. I miss her, & I extend my deepest sympathies to her family & loved ones. Karen Steele
