Barry Fairand Obituary
Barry Fairand, age 78, of Dublin, passed away peacefully Monday, April 22, 2013 surrounded by loving wife and children. Barry was born May 20, 1934 in Watertown, New York, son of the late Charles and Dorothy Fairand. Also preceded in death by his brothers Paul and Dick Fairand and sister Suzanne Himes. Barry graduated with a BS from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, Masters in Physics from University of Detroit, Michigan, and PhD in Physics from The Ohio State University. Barry began his career at Battelle Memorial Institute as a Senior Scientist and then went on to work for Sterigenics International as Vice President of Technology. For the past few years, Barry worked as a consultant in the radiation processing industry and had more than 36 years of experience in the field of scientific research. Barry's expertise includes the experimental and theoretical studies in nuclear physics, surface physics and the development and application of high power lasers as well as the scientific research and radiation processing of medical devices, pharmaceuticals and health care products. He was a member of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), working Group 2 on radiation sterilization; American Society for Testing Materials, committee E61 on dosimetry for radiation processing; Sigma Pi Sigma, Physics Honor Society; and Sigma Xi, Scientific Research Society. Barry was co-chair for the AAMI Radiation Process Control Task Group, he authored numerous books, technical reports and publications in his field of expertise, and was recently awarded by ASTM International for his sustained and exceptional contributions to the development of consensus standards in the field of nuclear technology and its applications. Barry is a member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church. He was a Buckeye fan who enjoyed attending the Memorial Golf Tournament, Irish Festival in Dublin, Sunday night dinners with his family, watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events, plays, band and school productions. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Jeanine Fairand; children, Mary (Keith) Schneider, Joan (Richard) Phalen, John (Michelle) Fairand, Amy Fairand and Ann (Steve) Arbaugh; grandchildren, Kaira and Grant Schneider, Alex and Taylor Herrington, Elyse, Nate, Will and Grace Fairand, and Catie and Nicole Coveyou; and many other extended family and dear friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2013 at St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church, 7170 Avery Rd., Dublin. Family will receive friends form 4-7 p.m. Thursday at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd. Msgr. Joseph M. Hendricks, Celebrant.
