Francis Dono Obituary

Dono Dr. Francis V. Dono, DO, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on Sunday, July 14, 2013 at McConnell Heart Hospital. Dr. Dono is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Mrs. Marilyn P. Dono; his beloved daughter, Ms. Mari Kay Dono of Columbus, OH; and his beloved son and daughter-in-law, Francis E. and Leanna Murphy Dono of Durham, NC. He is survived by three cousins, Mrs. Marie Vetere of Staten Island, NY, Mrs. Anna Capalbo and Ms. Margaret Motola of Brooklyn, NY in addition to many close relatives and friends. The son of the late Mary and Vincent Dono of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Dono was a graduate of Manhattan College, Riverdale, NY and received his D.O. degree in 1958 from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, Des Moines, IA. After his internship, Dr. Dono completed two residency programs at Doctors Hospital: OB/GYN in 1961 and Surgery in 1964. Later that same year, he began group practice as an bstetrician/Gynecologist, and a member of the Doctors Hospital Medical Staff. Dr. Dono was named Chief Medical Officer/Executive Vice-President, Medical Affairs in 1989 and then served six years as Medical Director, Patient Safety and Quality and Ambulatory Services (the position from which he retired in 2012). During his 22-year tenure, he developed a strong patient safety culture at Doctors Hospital and led efforts throughout the system to dramatically improve patient safety. Throughout his professional career, Dr. Dono was a pioneer in the cause for patient safety and his leadership was instrumental in helping OhioHealth, the Columbus community and our nation in the development of strong safety standards and practices. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, Dr. Dono was awarded the William C. Kelley Safety Leadership Award in May 2007. Dr. Dono was a member of the American Osteopathic Association, Ohio Osteopathic Association, Columbus Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, Senior Member - American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Senior Member - American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, Academy of Osteopathic Directors of Medical Education and Catholic Medical Association. Dr. Dono will be well-remembered among his colleagues for his passionate commitment to the education and continuous development of young physicians in order to provide excellent patient care. For that reason, he proudly served in teaching and clinical roles in the Department of OB/GYN, The Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, Ohio University and was an adjunct clinical professor working to recruit and train medical students. In the past few years, Dr. Dono was instrumental in the creation of The Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine's Diversity program in cooperation with OhioHealth to train and develop additional primary care physicians who would serve Ohio's most vulnerable communities. Dr. Dono was a lifelong Roman Catholic, member of St. Andrew Parish and served on the Board of Trustees for the Pontifical College Josephinum until April 2013. For their stewardship and devoted service to the development of young priests, Dr. and Mrs. Dono were the first recipients of the Pope Leo XIII Good Shepherd award in October 2010. Dr. Dono was a Knight of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. Among his friends and loved ones, Dr. Dono was a pillar of the community, always leading with compassion and dignity, advocating for quality health care for all. He was a member of the SERRA Club, active volunteer and board member of the Women's Care Center of Columbus, Inc. and volunteer with J.O.I.N. (the Joint Organization for Inner-City Needs), an organization that provides material needs for low income families in Franklin County and functions under Catholic Charities of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus. Just over 3 years ago, I lost my husband to Pancreatic Cancer. We both adored Frank, who became another honorary "Uncle" due to everything he did for us when I had 4 miscarriages. Because of his diligence, caring, and expertise, we had two beautiful, healthy children. I will always be eternally grateful to Frank, and Marilyn, who gave up so much to be his spouse and partner. Thinking of you as the anniversary of his passing nears.

My wife Melody (Mullins Vlasich) was a patient 30 yrs. ago-the man was a great seamstress, she had a full hyterectomy-great work on no scar. Good bedside demeanor. Class act. Condolences to the family, you're in our prayers.

To all of Dr. Dono's Family: if it were not for Frank, I would never have had the two beautiful (now adult) children, with whom I am blessed. We felt as though he was "Uncle Frank"; there are so many things I could say, but this space is too limited. I would like to share one of the funny memories I have of him with you, and hope this will bring smiles to your faces. After the 1st emergency c-section of our daughter, our son was a planned one. Well, having been in surgeries before, I arrived sans make-up, nail polish, etc. Frank took one look at me and said, "Where's your make-up? I'm not taking your case because you aren't wearing your make-up", then looked at me and grinned, as the whole room broke up. This is just ONE of the many memories I have of that wonderful relationship which developed over the course of 4 miscarriages, and 2 c-sections, both of which were, well, to say the least, complicated. When we cried, he cried with us. I loved him, and will miss him. I knew that I was receiving the BEST care there was available when he was in charge. Thank you all for sharing Dr. Frank Dono with all of us who needed him. We appreciated him, we appreciated you for supporting him, more than you will ever know.

What a wonderful physician and man. I knew Dr. Dono from working at Doctors North where my mother, Fran Copeland was the Director of Nursing and where my youngest sister Nancy Douglass worked. He was always handsomely dressed...looked great even in his scrubs...always a twinkle in his eyes while he offered thought-provoking words of wisdom or a funny joke. I'm sure both my mother and Nancy will welcome him into Heaven where they will discuss Doctors North and Ohio Health! He delivered wonderful words at Nancy's memorial almost 3 years ago. Heaven's getting another wonderful angel.

Our deepest sympathy to the entire Dono's family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May all the beautiful memories that Dr. Dono left behind and the notion that he touched the life of so many in his special way be of great comfort to you.

To the Dono family I want to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences. I became a patient of Dr. Dono's 23 years ago. I was his first patient to deliver triplets. I will never forget the look on his face at that ultrasound appt. He took care of me like I was his only patient, always caring and concerned. I have pictures of him holding the triplets on his lap. I have been a nurse for 30 years now and have never worked with a Doctor that was more compassionate then Dr. Dono. He will always be remembered and always in my heart. God bless your family.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Dono 39 years ago April 16, 1974 my son was born. During delivery there were complications...umbililcal cord wrapped around his neck, he was very close to death. I'd never seen nor ever saw again Dr. Dono. but, they called him in he did emergency C-section and within moments my son was out cleaned up and in nursery. To me this man was an angel on earth...now an angel above watching over all he loved and cared for. RIP Doctor.

My sympathy to all of Dr. Dono's family and friends. I sat and sobbed when I heard he passed. He was my doctor years ago and was absolutely wonderful. The reason I will never forget him is because he saved my mothers life. My Mom was very sick for weeks before scheduling an appt to see Dr. Dono (after no one else was able to help her). After blood work came back, Dr. Dono called my Dad and told him to get my Mom to the hospital ASAP. My Dad immediately took her and was told that Mom was literally only hours from death and would not have survived the night had Dad not brought her in. That was 20 yrs ago. I think about Dr. Dono often and he will always have a place in my heart. Thank you Dr. Dono for being you and for giving me another 20 yrs of life with my mother. I will absolutely NEVER forget you.
