John Kenyon Obituary

KENYON John P. "Jack' Kenyon, 79, formerly of Columbus died Monday, July 25, 2011, in Springfield, Ohio. He was born July 28, 1931 in Watertown, New York the son of Harold and Louise (Barnes) Kenyon and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Jack earned degrees from Penn State University and served in several management positions for the Borden Company in New York City from 1960-65. In 1965, he joined Dairy Technology at The Ohio State University as Instructor and Plant Manager of the Department's Dairy Plant. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1973 and devoted full time to teaching and administrative responsibilities. For almost two decades he taught Technologies of Dairy Foods, Laboratory Introduction to Food Systems, supervised the Department's Field Experience Program and served as Pilot Plant Manager. He served as the Department's Coordinating Advisor for undergraduates and Advisor to the Food Science and Nutrition Club and earned the University's Outstanding Service to Students Award in 1986. He served for many years as the Corresponding Secretary for the Central Ohio Dairy Foods Associates, a member of the Board of Directors, and one term President, of the Dairy Council of Mid-Ohio and Contest Supervisor for the Ohio State Fair Cheese Competition. He was the recipient of the 1994 Distinguished Service Award given by the faculty, students and alumni of OSU Food Science and Technology and received his "Professor Emeritus" from OSU. Following his retirement, Jack advanced his hobby of collecting and repairing unusual and valuable clocks and became a Certified Master Clockmaker. He developed and taught a course in Advanced Clock Repair, and was a feature writer and Technical Editor for the Horological Times. He wrote one of the top books in the field, "A Practical Course in Clock Repair". Jack was a member of the First Community Church of Columbus, Ohio, was a Scottish Rite Mason in lodges in New York and Columbus, and moved to the Springfield Masonic Community in 2011. He is survived by his son, J. Peter Kenyon of Mesa, Arizona; his second wife, Goldie E. Kenyon of Springfield Masonic Community; two step-children, Vicki (Patrick) Shade and their daughter Elizabeth, Mark (Diane) Cordle, all of St. Paris, Ohio and their daughter, Mallory (Zach) Carnes of Jamestown, Ohio; one sister-in-law, Jo Kenyon of Tallahassee, Florida; nephews, Robert B. Kenyon, Jr. and John R. Kenyon. He was preceded in death by his first wife Georgiene "Jean" Kenyon in 1976, and his brother Col. Robert B. Kenyon, USAF ret. The family will receive visitors Thursday, from 11 a.m.-12 Noon in the Chapel of the Ohio Masonic Home, 2655 W. National Rd. Springfield. Funeral services will be held Thursday, at 12 Noon in the chapel with Chaplain Brian Farr officiating. Burial to follow. The family is being served by the RICHARDS, RAFF & DUNBAR MEMORIAL HOME.
