Andrea Lynn Voight

Obituary Condolences

Voight Andrea Lynn Voight, 55, journalist and playwright, whose design talents and love of the English language once graced the pages of The Columbus Dispatch, passed away in Orange County, California, on June 12, 2017. Andrea was born in Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, on July 24, 1961. She began her journalism career in 1983, after graduating from Texas Women's University, at the San Angelo Standard-Times in San Angelo, Texas. In 1985 she joined the staff of the Dispatch, as a copy editor in the business section. But her true ambition was to be a playwright, and she worked assiduously at her craft. In 1989 she joined the staff of the Orange County Register, and soon was designing award-winning pages for the newspaper's most important sections. Andrea's passions were manifold, and included the music of Janet Jackson, the Detroit Tigers, and her family. She published two books notable for their charm and wit: "Traveling With My Family" (2015) and "And Then There's My Mother" (2016). Survivors include her mother, Jesselyn Voight; and siblings, Stephanie Burns, Bradley Voight, Alison Ewert, Keith Voight and Geoffrey Voight; and nieces and nephews, Andrea Burns, Alyssa Ewert, Alanna Ewert, Steven Burns, Benjamin Voight, Mitchell Voight, Marshall Voight, and Matthew Voight. Her passing leaves a great void in the lives of the many friends in Columbus and elsewhere who remember her with love. Andrea might best be described in these words from a novel by Willa Cather: She was "an uncommon person in a common, common world."
