Anthimos John Christoforidis, MD, PhD, died peacefully on April 2, 2018 surrounded by his family at home. Dr. Christoforidis is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Anna Christoforidis; his 4 sons, John (Vira), Gregory, Alexander, and Jimmy (Leah); and grandchildren, Anna, Anthimos, Mary, Leonidas, and Athena. Dr. Christoforidis was born in 1923 in Sille, near Iconio, in Asia Minor and was the last living Greek refugee from Sille. He graduated from Peiramatikon Gymnasium in 1941 with top honors in Thessaloniki, Greece, and matriculated at the Medical School of the University of Athens where he graduated first in his class in 1949. Dr. Christoforidis began a brilliant 58 year career in medicine in the Greek Army Medical Corps where he achieved the rank of Captain. He was recruited by Ohio State University to pursue residency training in Radiology in 1953. In addition to being a pioneer in chest radiography he was heavily involved in research, much of which was fundamental to his field. He was a respected and well-published educator with numerous textbooks and journal articles. He chaired the departments of radiology at 3 different universities: the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, the Medical College of Ohio, and Ohio State University. He completed and directed the first cancer hospital in Greece and was inducted into the Academy of Athens in 1990 for his contributions to Radiology. He retired from Ohio State in 2007 after serving the university, its students, and patients for 54 years. Dr. Christoforidis was loved and admired by many and touched countless lives. He will be missed and never forgotten. There will be a Trisagion memorial service at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N High St, at 10 am on Thursday, April 5.
