Born in Dayton, Ohio on March 18, 1933, she graduated from Stanford University and pursued her graduate degree at USC. Barbara will be remembered for her high level of energy, humanitarianism, love of the arts and the Democratic Party. She developed deep personal friendships with people around the world. Barbara lived life fully. She was a warm, kind, loving, and giving person. I'll always cherish fond memories of the time I spent with Barbara and her family- Si, her husband, and John, James, and Carla, her children. I feel very privileged to have known her.

Barbara and I knew each other at Stanford but I hadn't seen her until we met at our 50th reunion. We really clicked and I had hoped to get together with her again. I just received my Stanford Magazine for April and was shocked and indeed saddened to see why we had not connected. My sympathies to her family and so sorry we never again got together. But we did have fun at the 50th! Nancy Stone Bernard '55

Barabara helped my family assimilate to the US in 1962. As a counselor for the international student's office at the Ohio State University, she was the one willing to help this Chilean family with five small children. This act of kindness started a friendship that lasted 49 years and spanned three generations. Two years ago Barbara travelled to Chile for a visit that warmed our hearts and made my mother, her friend, feel very special. We will forever miss her.

It is difficult to find words to express my feelings for Barbara. She was a livewire, an extremely caring and loving person. She went out of her way to connect with people and make them feel special. She had that rare quality of reaching out to others, without expecting anything in return.

We first met in Columbus in the fall of 1968. I was a foreign student at OSU and returned to India in 1973. It was Barbara who ensured that my friendship with the Sokols survived the vicissitudes of time. As a matter of fact, she came to visit me in February this year. As we got together- Barbara, Maria Lydia and I, we realized that despite the passage of time, nothing had changed for us. The foundation of our friendship was so strong, that we loved one another just as intensely as we did when we first met. It was Barbara who had taught us how to nurture and cherish relationships.

I feel privileged to have known Barbara. She was a rare human being, a kind you do not meet these days.

I first met Barbara working as a carry-out boy at Big Bear when I was only 16. She is not the type of person that one forgets--she had such a "joie de vivre" about her. I always enjoyed talking to her and admired her for all the things that she did for the community. I loved the fact that she was a Democrat and supported all kinds of issues, especially gay rights...I am truly sad to learn of her passing--the world has lost one beautiful person!

Here was a special woman, lively, sophisticated, with knowledge of the arts and how they affected people. She loved Paris, San Francisco, Cincinnati and her home town Columbus, what a mix, but typical of Barbara. She had a good ear and a good eye for what worked in opera here in Cincinnati. Ruthann and I will miss this kind, sweet lady.

I met Barbara at a political event, but, during our conversation we discovered our mutual love of the Cincinnati Opera and we proceeded to talk about that for an hour. Her knowledge was encyclopedic and I will miss those wonderful conversations.

Barbara was one of the few people I always made a point of touching base with when I came back to Columbus. Both her energy & her love for her friends were boundless. I will miss her, and send my love to her family.
