Betty Jo Alkire Obituary
Alkire, Betty Jo
Betty Jo Alkire, 95, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, died peacefully with her family by her side on February 4, 2018 in St. Petersburg, FL. She lived her life joyfully with a kind and generous heart. She was a trailblazer as a professional woman with a long and distinguished career at Battelle Memorial Institute where she began as a secretary in 1951 and ended her 37 year career as a manager in charge of major projects. She was capable, confident, and secure which earned her the respect and admiration of everyone she worked with from her secretaries to the Director, a rare feat in those days. She retired to Florida to have a second career of helping her daughter, Lisa, raise her boys as her husband's professional sailing career took them all over the world. She was a great role model to her family. A woman who was brave, intelligent, curious, and dedicated to her children. She made her family's life fuller, by encouraging her grandchildren to follow their dreams, have life adventures, and work hard to succeed. Her greatest gifts to her entire family were the stories she told of her adventurous childhood and her unconditional love and positive outlook for each of them. She was an extraordinary woman who led a remarkable life. She leaves behind her children, Jeff Alkire and his family in Sacramento, CA, Stephanie Zimmerman and her husband, Ric, children, April Zimmerman Katz, Sam Zimmerman, and Liz Zimmerman Donaldson and their families in Columbus, OH, and Lisa Baird and her family in St. Petersburg, FL.
