David Nelson Ulry Obituary
Ulry David Nelson Ulry, 90, of Upper Arlington, passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Dave was born on August 30, 1926 in Gambier, Ohio to Orley N. and Lillian Brown Ulry. Residing in Gambier through most of high school, he then moved to Columbus, where he graduated from North High School. Dave served in the Philippines as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry from 1944-1946. Following his military service, he graduated from OSU with a B.S. in aeronautical engineering. Dave was employed by North American Aviation, Rockwell, and Boeing and earned many company patents and several private patents. As a child, Dave enjoyed dropping from a tree branch into the Kokosing River and swimming in the Kenyon College pool. He was always interested in aeronautical sciences and spent many hours employing his brilliant and ever-inquisitive mind in design elements. In later years, Dave continued his love of all things aeronautical by flying kites with his grandchildren. Dave was introduced to Janice, the love of his life, by a cousin at a New Year's party hosted by his mother. The generosity of a cousin in opening her home allowed him to continue seeing Janice, and they married in 1949 and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. Being an only child, Dave so appreciated his wife's larger family and always considered Doris (Clarence) Shrimplin, Edgar Staser, Lila (Merlin) Garver, and John (Joanne) Staser and their extended families as his own. Dave was active for many years at Covenant Presbyterian Church, serving as an usher, a deacon, and an elder. He loved to sing, whether alongside wife Janice at the home piano or in the church choir, in the Rockwell chorus, or in Vaud-Villities, where he performed for over 25 years. He loved outdoor activities, tennis, and pies of all kinds, especially his mother-in-law's fruit pies. Dave had many interests and activities, but most of all he loved his family, and especially relished playing with his grandchildren and assisting with their science projects. He was eagerly anticipating the birth of his first great-grandchild in September. David was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law Walter and Alta Williamson Staser, as well as by his brothers- and sisters-in-law. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Janice; children, Thomas (Suzanne) Ulry and Nancy (David) Snider; and grandchildren, Lindsay (Janet) Wesner, John (Marissa) Snider, and Emily Ulry. A memorial gathering will be planned for a future date. Contributions may be made to the memorial fund at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Road, Columbus 43221. Family has entrusted SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL with final arrangements.
