David Phalen Obituary
Phalen, David
David Phalen, dying at the age of 81, grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts, the son of the late Stanley and Margaret Phalen. He graduated from Hebron Academy and had degrees from Tufts University and the University of Utah. Dave was a longtime resident of Upper Arlington, until about twenty years ago, when he and his wife moved to German Village. Other than the love of family, he was dedicated to the sport of ice hockey, which he started playing at a very young age. He continued to play for Lexington High School, Hebron Academy and Tufts University. When youth ice hockey was introduced to Columbus about fifty years ago, he became an eager volunteer. Since he was one of the few local men who had played collegiate hockey, he was asked to coach one of the teams. He was dedicated to assisting the growth of hockey in central Ohio and was very active in CAHA (the Columbus Amateur Hockey Association) for many years. Dave is often credited to being one of the founding fathers of youth hockey in Columbus. After retiring, Dave became an avid photographer, winning a number of awards for his work. His professional life included working many years for Columbus Paper and Copy Supply. He leaves his wife, Heather, who also grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts; sons, Stephen (Lizanne) of Chicago, IL and Richard (Joani) of Warrenton, VA; as well as a brother, Bruce Phalen, of Lewes, DE. Three grandsons, Nicholas, Benjamin and Campbell Phalen also are a part of Dave's legacy. There are no plans for services at this time. Arrangements by SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 E. State St., Columbus, OH 43215.
