STRAUSBAUGH Retired Judge, Dean Strausbaugh, 91, passed away on March 18, 2010, following a distinguished career of service to the citizens of Franklin County. He was born on August 27, 1918, the son of the late Ethel Dean and Harold Dale Strausbaugh, the latter a general practitioner from 1912 until 1940 and on the staff of Mount Carmel Hospital. Judge Strausbaugh was raised on the "Hilltop" in Columbus, and attended West High School. He held an undergraduate degree from Duke University, a graduate degree from Harvard Business School, and Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Michigan Law School. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He served for three years in the United States Navy (lieutenant) in World War II, two of which were served overseas. In 1948, Judge Strausbaugh was admitted to the practice of law in Ohio. He engaged in the private practice of law for 6 years, and served as a Reading Clerk for the Ohio House of Representatives during the 99th and 100th Ohio General Assemblies and as First Assistant City Attorney for 2 years prior to his election to the Municipal Court in 1955, where he served from 1955 to 1968. In 1955, he received the "Distinguished Service Award" from the Columbus Junior Chamber of Commerce. He served as President of the Ohio Municipal Judges Association, and was a board member of the North American Judges Association, and Special Committee on Presiding Judges. Elected to the Franklin County Court of Appeals in 1969, he served the court faithfully until his retirement in 1991. He also sat by assignment on the Ohio Supreme Court and on other Ohio Appellate Courts. At the time of his retirement, Judge Strausbaugh held the distinction of having the longest record of continuous service (36 years) among all county judges. During his retirement, Judge Strausbaugh served as a judge with the Ohio Court of Claims. He was a member of the Columbus and Ohio State Bar Associations, and served on the Ohio Judicial Council, the Ohio Court of Appeals Association, and the Ohio Supreme Court Committee on Uniform Rules. Judge Strausbaugh's commitment to community led him to serve in many civic and religious organizations. He was president of the Columbus Area Community Mental Health Center (1970-1973), the University Club of Columbus (1974-1975), as well as past president of the Columbus Area Council on Alcoholism and of One-to-One. He was an advisory board member of the Franklin County Leukemia Society, the Alcoholism Prevention Board, and served on the board of directors of the Alcoholism Prevention Community Agency for Labor and Management. He served as a board member and vice president of Catholic Social Services, and as a board member of the Ohio Citizens Council, the Consumers Credit Counseling Service of Columbus, the Community Relations Committee of the United Community Council, and the Columbus Chapter of World Neighbors. In recent years, Judge Strausbaugh was active in the Columbus Rotary. He was an active member of Central College Presbyterian Church. He is survived by Mary Elizabeth Smith (Betty), his devoted, loving wife of 60 years; son, Dr. John Strausbaugh of Ft. Myers, FL.; daughter, Ann O'Boyle and her husband, Jack of Dallas, TX; two grandchildren, Amy Teter and J.J. O'Boyle; two great- grandchildren; a brother, Bob Strausbaugh of Columbus; his son, David Strausbaugh and daughter-in-law, Mary Strausbaugh; sister and brother-in-law, Ginger and Dick Mead of Miami, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends 2-4 pm and 5-7 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at SCHOEDINGER MIDTOWN CHAPEL, 229 East State Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Central College Presbyterian Church, 975 S. Sunbury Road, Westerville, Ohio 43081. Pastor Dr. Richard Ellsworth officiating.
