Donald Edward Jenks Obituary
Donald Edward Jenks, age 87, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away surrounded by his loving family Saturday, October 12, 2013. He is preceded in death by parents Genevieve and Granville Jenks, brothers Granville Robert and James, sister-in-law Marjorie Jenks, brother and sister-in-law Richard and Elizabeth Ham and grandson's Greg and Craig Klise. Don is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Bette Ham Jenks; daughters, Donna (Bob) Klise, Dorene Jenks (Ralph Kerr); grandchildren, Lynne (Scot) Robbins, Rob (Kristi) Klise, Hallie and Hannah Kerr; great-grandchildren Zachary, Kiersten, and Lauryn Robbins, Robby and Lilly Klise; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He will be deeply missed by all. Don was a graduate of West High School Class of 1944 and received his Bachelor's degree in Education from The Ohio State University in 1950. With the rank of Sergeant and Crew Chief, he served in the Army Air Corps assigned to the 52nd Air Force Reconnaissance Squadron stationed in the Azores during World War II. Don taught Industrial Arts in Columbus Public Schools for over 25 years. Upon his retirement in 1987, he received an Excellence in Education award. A charter member and Past President of the Westgate Kiwanis he received the Legion of Honor for 25 years of service as a Kiwanian. Don was extremely invested in the Camp Fire Girls program, serving several terms on the Board of Directors as Camp Property Chairman. He received both the Luther Halsey Gulick and the Earnest Thompson Seaton Awards, national recognitions for his dedication to Camp Fire and the camping program. Don volunteered three years of his time to design and coordinate the building of the caretaker's home at Camp Wyandot in the Hocking Hills. The Columbus Foundation recognized him for his community service. Don had a love for vintage cars. He spent most of his retirement years restoring an l930 Model A Ford and enjoying his 1962 Ford Thunderbird. Visitation will be 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the SCHOEDINGER FUNERAL CHAPEL, 3030 West Broad Street, Columbus, where a memorial service will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 17. A private graveside ceremony will take place at a later date.
