Higgins Elaine Burns Higgins, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. She was born December 20, 1943 in her family home in Shawnee to the late Lawrence D. and Bernice Moody Burns. She was a 1961 graduate of Shawnee High School and a 1989 graduate of Hocking College. After years of working as a hair dresser at the Union and Madison's at Kingdale, Elaine moved back to her hometown to care for her maternal grandmother, Ellen Elizabeth "Nell" Moody. Elaine loved Shawnee and decided to stay after Mom Moody died in 1988. Elaine was committed to seeing Shawnee and Southern Perry County thrive. Elaine organized the Southern Perry Quilt Show for over 20 years although she confessed to never making a quilt. She was the past president of the Shawnee Historical Preservation and Business Development Group, which organized many events in town for many years. Elaine was a founding member and current board president of the Southern Perry Incubation Center for Entrepreneurs (SPICE) which helped dozens of people start their own business and provided over $100,000 in micro-loans. She was a 20 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and current Worthy Matron of the Bluebell Chapter # 151 OES. Her sense of humor made her installation into office memorable. She is survived by her two children: son, Vance R. Higgins II and daughter, Erin S. Higgins to cherish her memory; she was the fifth of eight children and leaves behind her sisters, Peggy McGruder, Marsha (Ron) Hinton and Connie Burns; brothers, Buddy, Bob and Rick Burns; 18 nieces and nephews; many grand nieces and nephews; a sprinkling of great-grand nieces and nephews; too many friends to count and 85 tea pots. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Bill Burns. Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Shawnee United Methodist Church with Rev. Ernie Perkins officiating. Interment Shawnee Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. on Wednesday at the church with family in attendance from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and from 1-2 p.m. on Thursday at the church Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
