Elden L. (ELY) Yates, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 3, 2018 at the age of 85 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born April 28, 1932. Attended Central High School, but graduated from New Holland High School where he played basketball. Avid sports enthusiast – played fast-pitch softball, bowling leagues, coached little league baseball, loved OSU Buckeyes, loved attending auctions, playing euchre, and was a passionate telephone collector. Elden was a member of Lewis Center United Methodist Church, and Telephone Pioneers. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy 1951-55. Elden was a member of The American Legion Post #239 and was a participant in the Honor Flight for hero war veterans. He retired from Ohio Bell/AT&T in 1985 and retired from Ohio State University UNITS in 1993. Elden was preceded in death by parents, Walter Yates and Robert and Elva McCafferty; brother, Joe, and granddaughter, Julia. Surviving him are his wife of 60 years, Roberta; daughters, Terri and Steve Shaw and Kelly and Paul Bargnesi; sons, James, Trent and Robyn, Scott and Kari, and Timothy Yates; grandchildren, Tyler, Megan, Scott, Wayne, Kayla, Bethany, Cori, Nate, Jacob, Kenzee and Kelsee; and seven great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister, Lorraine Werner and sisters-in-law, Sue Yates and Sandra Wineka and many nieces and nephews. Elden was personally thankful to the care given by Dr. Timothy Moore since 2000 and the family is forever grateful for the services provided by Mt. Carmel Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Telephone Pioneers of Columbus, 111 N. Fourth Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 or Lewis Center United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends on Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 1 to 5 p.m. at THE RUTHERFORD FUNERAL HOME AT POWELL, 450 W. Olentangy Street, Powell, Ohio 43065. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Lewis Center United Methodist Church, 1081 Lewis Center Road, Lewis Center, Ohio 43035.
