Elizabeth Custer, formerly of Bexley, died peacefully at the age of 97 on Sunday, April 15, 2018 in Granville. She was born on February 9, 1921 in Columbus, daughter of the late Dr. William H. and Mary (McDowell) Miller. Betty graduated from Columbus School for Girls (Class of 1939) and then attended and graduated from Smith College. She married Henry Custer, who was co-owner of Fairfield Paper where he had a long and successful career. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and daughter who cared for her father helping to manage his Radiology Practice for many years. Betty had boundless energy, was a great bridge player, avid gardener and tennis player, and loved her family, friends and neighbors. She always enjoyed a good party and looked for ways to help others and to volunteer. Betty was a lifelong member of Broad Street Presbyterian Church; Friends of Topiary Park; Inniswood Garden Society; Twig 2 of Children's Hospital; Rocky Fork Country Club; Mary Ritter Garden Club; Junior League of Columbus; Franklin Park Conservatory; and Columbus Museum of Art. She is preceded in death by parents William and Mary Miller, husband Henry Lewis Custer, step-sons Geoffrey and Christopher Custer. She is survived by her son, William (Lori) Custer; step-son, Henry Custer, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Judy Custer; her grandchildren, Andrew, Ann and Michael (Jaci) Custer and Nancy (Michael) Valudes; along with four beautiful great grandchildren. A memorial service with reception to follow will be held at 11:30am Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio. Private committal at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden. The family would especially like to thank the caring, compassionate, loving staff at Middleton Senior Living.
