Elsbeth Connaughton Obituary
Connaughton, Elsbeth
1935 - 2017
Elsbeth Maria Connaughton, 82, died peacefully in her sleep at Our Family Home in Worthington in the early hours of October 28, 2017. Hers was a life rich with experiences she carved out for herself, beginning with her journey as a young woman from a small village in Germany, through England, and then on to America. Along the way, she mastered several languages — which she used as adeptly in her world travels as in her charming flirtations. In her earlier years, her singular drive led her to earn a high school diploma and undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Ohio State University while working full-time and raising two small children as a single mother. In her later years, that drive allowed her to fight her way back from a traumatic brain injury and a coma — and to learn to play the piano during her rehabilitation. She was not a quitter in any circumstances, and was defiant in many: an animal lover, she fed stray cats and geese despite repeated citations from her condo association, and, until very nearly her dying day, she exercised what she regarded as her inalienable right to go to Kroger's for milk as often as possible and more often than necessary. Her family will miss her brightly colored outfits, her unique birthday gifts, her huge smile in every family photo, her unconditional love for animals, and her daily example that one overcomes challenges not only with a lot of hard work and commitment, but also a bit of rebellion. We raise cups of warmed milk in her honor. Elsbeth was preceded in death by her beloved son Owen Delios Connaughton. She is survived by her daughter, Michele Coffey; daughter-in-law, Stacey Connaughton; grandchildren, Christina (Michael) Eckstein and Nicholas Connaughton; great grandchildren, Averie, Michael Owen and Emma Eckstein; and sister, Kriemhild Schulte. She was blessed to have the love and support of her niece and nephew, Matthias (Angela) Schulte and Claudia (Wolfgang) Manstein; dear friend, Ariel Ford and the entire Ford family; Owen and Michele's stepmother, Deaun and brothers, Michael and Duston Connaughton; Mildred (her "other daughter") and the caregivers at Our Family Home; and a lifetime of friends. "Dem Leben sind Grenzen gesetzt, die Liebe ist grenzenlos." Family will receive friends 10 AM-12 PM on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221, where a funeral service will follow at 12 PM. Interment at Concord Cemetery, Grove City, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Cure Alzheimer's Fund, http://www.curealz.org/.
