1944 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
Genel Rick Genel, of Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at the age of 72 after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Maureen O'Connor Genel; his two sons, Dan (Tanya) of Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Dave (Diane) Genel of Portland, Oregon; and his three grandsons, Drew, Ryan and Alexander in New Jersey; and two granddaughters, Julia and Jacqueline in Oregon. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Levanoni (Mendel); his two step-sisters, Joanne Mantell (Lester) and Lori Caress; and numerous nieces and nephews. Rick was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Samuel and Ruth Genel. He graduated from Lower Merion High School outside of Philadelphia in 1962, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Michigan State University. He later received his Masters in Business Administration from Xavier University. During the Vietnam War, Rick proudly served his nation as a Lieutenant in the US Army in the 11th Infantry Brigade of the Americal Division. Professionally, Rick started his career as a Certified Public Accountant with Lybrand, Ross Bros. & Montgomery in Columbus, Ohio. Later, he served as Chief Financial Officer of National Deferred Compensation, Inc., also of Columbus, Ohio, which was ultimately acquired by Nationwide Insurance. An avid golfer, Rick was a founding member of Muirfield Country Club in Dublin, Ohio. He enjoyed playing in his retirement years at Stonebridge Country Club in Naples, Florida, where he was elected to Board of Directors in 2015. Rick was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He loved and provided for his family always, and was a loyal friend and colleague to so many. His kindness will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. A celebration of Rick's life will be held at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Naples, Florida, on Tuesday, June 6 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a contribution in his memory are encouraged to donate to Avow Hospice (avowcares.org), 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, Florida 34105, or Columbus Museum of Art (columbusmuseum.org), 480 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215.
